Didn't they get rich with a lawsuit? Yes, they worked hard at the dry cleaners, but I seem to remember that they were able to move on up b/c they sued someone.

Growing up, I never had a close relationship with my own parents, and logically, George and Weezy Jefferson became vicarious parent figures in my own life.  Whenever I was confronted with a problem, I could always count on sage and level headed advice to be portioned out by Weezy or a crazy, harebrained scheme by George to give me guidance.

 

Lionel was like a brother to me and I have to say that I felt a great sense of betrayal when he continued to make guest appearances on All in the Family.  However, that paled in comparison when my muse, Florence, left to try her hand at a spin-off.  That bit of treachery still causes bad feelings to this day.

 

George and Weezy weren't perfect, George calling me "honky" during the Thanksgiving episode was particularly hurtful, and Weezy probably let me get away with more than she should, but I still get a warm, sentimental feeling whenever I stop by the drycleaners.

George Jefferson was a successful businessman, millionaire and owner of seven dry cleaning stores. There's a lengthy story about them here and it makes no mention of any lawsuit. Not that it never happened, but I've found nothing that said it did. Have you?

I try not to be a spelling nazi but misspelled headlines bug me. Particularly to announce someone death. It seems a tad disrespectful.

"The Jeffersons" was meant to be (and was spun off from) a black version of "All In The Family" with George playing the Archie "bigot" role. Weezie was supposed to be the Edith-like kindhearted foil.

But, over time, both Archie and George were allowed to mellow and now the left thinks blacks are *incapable* of bigotry. I wonder how that idea goes over in Zimbabwe.

There was a huge age difference between Sanford and Hemsley.

According to IMDB.com, she was born in 1917 and he was born in 1938. I knew that she was older, but I had no idea how much older.

Yes, she was 87. I remember some 20 years ago I told some friends that Isabel Sanford was close to 70 years old -- they didn't believe me.

Then I reminded them that she played the maid in "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" some 20 (now close to 40) years ago. Then they believed me.

Me too! I just seen her and Sherman Helmsley in an Old Navy commericial. Holy smokes she looked good for an 87 year old. I thought maybe she was in her 60s - wait a minute, she WAS in her 60s during the television show!!!!
