(New York-WABC, July 11, 2004) This weekend, 10 people were killed -- all from shootings.
It was such an unusual spike in crime, Commissioner Ray Kelly felt compelled to address it on Sunday -- calling it "exceptional" -- especially since the murder rate is down city-wide.
It was crime scene after crime scene and the death toll kept rising. In New York City, 10 people were shot and killed since Friday night. Some residents blamed it on the warm weather, but Mayor Bloomberg has another theory.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg, New York City: "There's too many guns on the street. And people use guns. Guns have one purpose, it is to kill people. There is no reason to have a gun."
This rash of gun violence spans four of the five boroughs, from a building in the West Village were one man was shot and killed to Coney Island where three people were shot, one fatal. Also, hit, the Lower East Side; Woodside, Queens; Flatbush and Bay Ridge, Brooklyn; and the Concourse section of the Bronx. The shootings are not connected, but in a way, as a society, they are all connected.
One man Eyewitness News spoke to said he thinks the problem is bigger than just gun control. He says society has to look into what makes these people violent.
As the shootings piled up, this weekend the NYPD went on offensive, look at the numbers, they said, the crime is down citywide. At this time last year, 307 murder, so far, this year, 273, shootings, 742 by this time last year, as of July 4th, this year, 671.
Of all of the shootings this weekend, police have made one arrest so far in one of the case. They are still investigating the others. And as a side note, there has been more violence in New York City today. In Brooklyn, a deadly stabbing, where someone was killed and there has just been another shooting there as well.
Keep in mind that Kelly was David Dinkins' police commissioner. Over 2,000 homicides per year seemed just right back then. Guess he's trying to get back to the good old days BEFORE Rudy!
Iraq has been repeatedly compared to the size of California so I went to the California crime web site and found the in 2002( the last year noted) they had 2000 homicides. We've lost 850 soldiers in a war zone. Even adding the killed in Afghanistan it's not 2000. Thats 2 wars and it's more dangerous for Americans in California.
When I bring this up, people say I'm degrading the sacrifice of our soldiers, but I'm not. I'm proud of the job they are doing and their professionalism. I'm just saying the war is going quite well according to any standard one can use. We lost more people taking one hill in "Nam" than in 2 wars. It scares me to think how weak the US citizenry has become over the years. What if we had losses like in Normandy again? Would we have to negotiate with tyrants to stay elected to office?
The question most people should be asking instead of "why so many guns", is, "why so many murderers?" We might have to confront school prayer, right and wrong, patriotism, nationalism, good and evil, etc.
Smokers become unpleasant when the tobacco Nazis restrict them too much.
There's too many homicides on the street. The homicides are out there, and so people have to be prepared. There is no reason to have a homicide. But if there are homicides out there, on the street, then that's an excellent reason to have some guns. The guns serve to counter all of those homicides, out there on the street.
Just an observation by an ol' Texas boy, but maybe if the good guys carried guns too, the bad guys might think twice about clearing leather. Seems to work for us folks down here, course, we ain't sophisticated like New Yorkers.
Rudy is too liberal to be President, but he was the perfect NYC mayor. Someone should ask him to run again.
I agree that Rudy is too liberal to be president. He would never get thru our primaries. He's for gun control, partial birth abortion, higher taxes, etc. etc.
Are there more guns per person in NYC or in most rural towns? Which has the higher murder rate? Most small towns probably do better than NYC.
Much like the Brits, they think that taking guns away from honest citizens will make them safer. They never have figured out that it also means that only outlaws will have guns.
My two cents it is more likely alcohol and domestic disturbances are to blame.
Perhaps some Senor intoxicated and stupidly pissed at his senorita or some dude on a drinking binge and got tired of the bitch yelling all the time.
Or some young brothers downin' the 40ozs and acting tough in da hood.
If you take away guns knives would work just as well take away knives and someone gets beat to death.
Very good points.
Mayor Bloomberg has his head where the Sun does not shine. He needs to secure the services of a surgeon to implant eyeholes next to his belly-button, so he can see out.
There's just too many knives on the street. There's only one purpose for a knife -- to kill people. There's no reason anyone needs a gun.
What a maroon!
well for one you get to shoot back
in NYC you just get shot
I would make a bet if any of these kilers voted, They voted for Hillary.
Hey Bloomberg, just admit you are a leftist and a hoplophobe and your dream is an American citizenry enslaved by the socialist elite. I wouldn't live in your hell-hole of a city for anything. Besides, you are a one-term mayor, so make your stink while you still have the chance, because you will not be re-elected.
The RNC made a huge mistake in selecting NYC for its 2004 convention.
The Bloomberg theory would have to prove that there were more guns on the street and spiked in conjunction with the homicide rate increase. Otherwise it is political rhetoric meaning only the desire to eliminate self-defense and liberty.
If the decent folks hang together,I wouldn't be shocked to hear about some Anarchists getting stomped. :)
.
A couple weeks back, noise in an unused home caused one of my neighbors to call LE.
By the time the Deputy arrived there were about a half dozen of my friends and neighbors, called together with cell phones, surrounding the house waiting to back him up.
A Mexican escaped from prison was caught and I'm told he only fell down three times. :)
Real Americans aren't to be fooled with, particularly when they know to stand together.
