Kerry backs off Bush bash
New York Daily News ^ | 7/10/04 | HELEN KENNEDY

Posted on 07/10/2004 2:55:24 AM PDT by kattracks

The Bush camp forced John Kerry yesterday to disavow raunchy celebrity comments at the Democratic gala at Radio City Music Hall as the presidential campaign erupted into a war over who has better values.

Republicans hit the ceiling because John Mellencamp sang a song calling President Bush "a cheap thug" and Whoopi Goldberg joked about George Bush's last name and Dick Cheney's first.

The flap accomplished two GOP goals: trample on Kerry's rollout of John Edwards as running mate and block his attempt to move away from Howard Dean-style anger toward a voter-friendly message of hope.

Bush campaign manager Ken Mehlman branded Thursday's $7.5 million Democratic fund-raiser a "star-studded hatefest" and demanded Kerry release a video of the show.

Kerry's camp refused, saying Bush doesn't even let reporters cover his fund-raisers. "The hypocrisy ... is almost unimaginable," said Kerry adviser Tad Devine.

Kerry campaign manager Mary Beth Cahill said Kerry rejected some of the comments, which included Chevy Chase saying of Bush, "This guy's as bright as an egg timer."

"He does not approve of some of the remarks that were made last night and he has made that clear," Cahill told reporters. In fact, Kerry did not comment on the flap.

The Bush camp said Kerry should have disavowed the comments as soon as they were made."John Kerry just sat there, grinning like a mule eating briers," said Sen. Zell Miller (D-Ga.), a Bush supporter.

The Kerry camp noted Bush never condemned Cheney for telling a Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) on the Senate floor to go f--- himself.

Campaigning in Pennsylvania, Bush called Kerry "out of step with mainstream values" because he voted against funding troops, federal support for religious groups and a law requiring parental approval for teenage abortions.

Kerry and Edwards accused Bush of trying to distract voters from economic issues.

They said they represent "real American values" because they want to focus on education, health care and jobs instead of abortion, gay marriage and foul-mouthed celebs.

" Cheney's remark to Leahy came during a private conversation, and was made public only when Leahy decided to publicize it."
" Apparently, the media doesn't understand the difference between this and a very public display of filth, which Kerry characterizes as American Values."

Oh they understand alright. It's their complicity that needs to be "hammered", as it is, I suppose.

It's just that I would use a "sledge hammer" and most, that are telling the truth, seem to be using a "tacking hammer". ;)

Oh gee. There's that word again. If you don't have anything to be ashamed of by the antics of these performers, release the tape!

It was so bad that copyright or not, they are ashamed of the performance.

The John/John campaign lied!

"The hypocrisy of them making a call like that is almost unimaginable," said Devine, adding that Bush and Cheney restrict access to their own campaign events. (In fact, the administration's practice is to let reporters into all fund-raisers except those in private residences. While reporters were invited to the Kerry concert, they were forbidden from recording.)

'I keep hearing the same comments "on the Senate floor" like Cheney was on the floor making these comments and not in a private conversation. It is not true and it is just another way of twisting the truth."

That's exactly the intent of the authors and their employers.

The re-writing of history (propaganda) is being written in nanoseconds now.

Magicians have nothing on these sleezeballs. Their slight of hand is simply amazing, and very believable, to those who haven't seen the trick before.

John Kerry just sat there, grinning like a mule eating briers," said Sen. Zell Miller

One of the most effective, defining, and influential moments of this entire campaign will be when Zell speaks at the Republican Convention. The independent voters who are watching that night or who read his words later will come over to the correct side before November.

I can't wait for that great speech.

Remember what they did with "the 16 words"? I still have a hard time understanding that one. Good God these people are juvenile to say the least.

Leahy is a colleague - not paying money for access to a future Presidential candidate.
I want to know what, exactly, was said by whom.
I'm better the "stars" who ponied up the cash are freaking out that consumers of their product may actually find out what kind of scum they are.
What Hollywood thinks is good for America, is very very bad for the real America.

I used to go to the movies about once a month. I no longer go , nor do I rent or buy CDs, DVDs or videos anymore. Long ago I decided, that to the extent possible, not pay money that goes to people who have views so strongly against mine. I don't buy French products either and I even try to avoid flying on Airbuses. I like Boeing.

"Remember what they did with "the 16 words"? I still have a hard time understanding that one."

Ah, yes ... the 16 words ... "''the British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa.'' (from GWB's State of the Union speech)

" Good God these people are juvenile to say the least."

Here, I'm afraid, we disagree.

Juvinile? Not at all.

The skewing of that sentence is simply an example of the enemies (reads Democrat Party) premeditated design to spread lies and inuendo to defeat an American President.

O.K. The Bush/Cheney folks need to make political hay out of this. It will not have the effect of the Wellstone "Memorial" but hey, if it's worth only 1/2 of a percetage point (.5%) of the votes, in a close election, that's a lot.

Jump on this Sean, Rush, Billy O' or somebody. Ride this horse until it drops.

What comes to mind at times like this, is the little kid at the playground who isn't picked for the baseball team, or the football team, so he/she screams and throws a temper tantrum and calls everyone "bullies", and how its not fair.......juvenile, yes I think they all act like a bunch of little kids. Even tho they are now lawyers, judges, senators, etc....

"Carvile dumbed down the retoric so far that a rock star with an identity crisis, a washed up 2-bagger ugly comedian with bad hair and a Jerry Lewis wannabe tell butt jokes for votes."

LET'S NOT FORGET ALEC BALDWIN AND GEORGE CLOONEY FROM THE 2000 ELECTION. THE AMERICAN PUBLIC RESPONDED AND TODAY THE ONLY GIG THEY CAN GET IS BEING ON HOLLYWOOD SQUARES. FOR REAL!!!!
