Doctor ordered to serve homeless

He'll cook and clean up as his penalty for vandalizing a colleague's car.

Sacramento orthopedic physician Randall K. Schaefer will be setting his surgical scrubs aside and donning an apron as punishment for vandalizing another doctor's car. The former head of orthopedic surgery at Sutter Medical Center and well-known sports medicine specialist will be cooking food, serving meals and cleaning up after the homeless for 540 hours.

"He will be feeding the hungry in an impoverished area of the community," said Frank Kennedy, program manager for the Alternative Sentencing Program. The program is overseeing Schaefer's work for Sacramento Superior Court, where the doctor recently pleaded no contest to misdemeanor vandalism.

From May 2002 to January 2003, Schaefer "keyed" his partner's luxury cars five times.

This is just the type of sentence you'd expect a liberal judge to hand down. Why didn't he just order the doctor to pay restitution to the other doctor, or perhaps fine him.

Last paragraph: As part of his sentencing, Schaefer was fined $500 and ordered to make $21,836 in restitution to Coward and office manager Sandy Hamelin. He also was placed on three years' informal probation.

The Bee never had to be excerpted before. I'm deeply saddened.

The paragraph above is from the bottom of the article. Still, I agree that the doctor shouldn't have to take care of the homeless.

Not sure how taking care of the homeless is appropriate punishment for that crime. Unless he was sentenced to 540 hours of community service, and this is how it is served, in general.

The victim's name is Dr. Coward!

If I had the misfortune of being born with that name I would have changed it. He must have went through hell in grade school.

OK, let's see if I've got this straight, we got two type-A, sub-moral trapeze artists climbing the center pole of the big top and one of them reaches for the brass ring, misses the target just a bit, pisses off the other guy whose brother knows the neighbor of the dude who lives across the street from the police chief and he pulls the anchor ropes and down comes the whole mess.

Are you sure there isn't a little localized high-blood pressure involved here someplace?

What the heck would make a doctor do something like that? Maybe he had good reason.
