Army recruit falls to death from hotel window
The Associated Press 7/9/2004, 1:45 a.m. ET
CLEVELAND (AP) An Army recruit about to leave for basic training fell nine stories to his death from the window of a downtown hotel.
John Castillo, 18, of Fremont, was with five other military recruits at the Embassy Suites when he fell from the window Wednesday night, police said.
According to witnesses, Castillo said, "Look out" to the others and ran toward the window. But when he tried to stop, he slipped and fell out, police said.
Castillo suffered injuries to his head, chest and abdomen, said Dr. Elizabeth Balraj, Cuyahoga County coroner. Police said Castillo's death appears to have been accidental.
Castillo was to board a plane Thursday and head to Fort Jackson, S.C., to begin basic training, said Tim Turpin, chief of public affairs with Army recruiting for northern Ohio.

ping
Darwin Award with Oak Leaf Cluster.
God help this young mans family, but I also say a prayer that this idiot didnt make anywhere near my sons unit
What a tragic, silly way to die.
ROFLMAO!
Actually that would be just a ribbon. He has to get the award twice to get the Oak Leaf Cluster.
How do you get a Darwin award twice???
Aaaaah ... I wonder if Kerry will pin a Purple Heart on this guy.
I wonder if he had someone hold his beer before pulled this stunt.
But seriously this is a sad end to a youth who was doing something that many of us did in our ill spent youth but were fortunately able to survive.
And we should thank his grieving parents for having raised a son who was willing to join the service and give his life for his country.
john was not an idiot....i graduated with him and attended his funeral ...he was loved by alot of people! he was a great guy and it was a trajic mistake to lose him after what would be a celebration of the recruits beginnig their training the next day!he will be sorrowly missed and if all of you really knew him you would have a better opinion of him....god bless him for believing in our country! and i hope that the suffering of his family is eased with time!
Riiiiiiiiiiight.
I'm sure he was a great guy, and I feel for his family. But you can't escape that fact that he apparently had too much to drink and did something fatally unwise.
That is not surprising. More than 2 young GIs in a group, plenty of beer, can cause a lot of heartache. The kids do a great job sober. But they can sure raise some hell away from duty. I know I did.
My qualifer:I was a MP(MIlitary Police for you non military) for 3 years.
I am sorry for your loss (If true), but I doubt your credentials. Very few 18 year olds could find this place.

Just signed up, one and only post. Coincidence?
This happens often, where someone signs on and claims knowledge of a current situation. Who knows what to believe?
I threw my Darwin Award over the White House fence. Wait, maybe it was someone else's.
Hey, we got one! See post #10!
Although, maybe you're "busy" (wink, wink)! :-)
