It is much more general treatment, and goes beyond vampirism.
Per "Malleus Maleficarum" [15th century inquisition manual] it is the recommended first aid against those with "pythonic spirit", such as CHANNELERS, false prophets, demoniacally possessed (and repossessed) and so on. Holy water, sanctified salt, and chrism oil were recommended as the next line of defense, followed by more serious treatments application of which was best left to the [inquisition] professionals.
