Cell Phone Call Saves Girls Surrounded By Rattlesnakes Rattlesnake Trapper Finds 25 To 30 Snakes In Area
POSTED: 1:41 pm EDT July 8, 2004 UPDATED: 2:19 pm EDT July 8, 2004
LIVINGSTON, Montana -- Two Colorado girls vacationing in Montana used a cell phone to call for help after finding themselves on a hillside infested with dozens of rattlesnakes.
Izzy Effler, 13, and Morgan Beadwell, 12, climbed a hill in Livingston to try to get cell phone reception.
However, while climbing, Izzy said a rattlesnake struck at her.
Morgan also reportedly stepped on a snake.
The girls then discovered that they were surrounded by six rattlers and used the phone to call for help, according to the report.
Brian Effler and his nephew eventually rescued the girls after shooting two of the snakes.
A rattlesnake trapper said he saw 25 to 30 snakes in the area.
The girls were not injured.

Texas Doctors have been behind the times for decades (150 years?)in treating snake bites. The popular method still used in most areas is "Wait'n Scrape". Wait until the tissue dies and then scrape it away.
Anti-venom has to be sought out. It takes the Florida Docs to educate ours in treatment of such. After that incident three weeks ago, we know where to drive to, not another 450 mile U-turn.
Current price for anti-venom as of three weeks ago is $1000 per vial. He used up 8 vials.
My grandson was so proud to shoot his first rattlesnake this year. He's 8 and he got it with a .22 and took the rattles off and terrorized us girls.
But, I thought he meant it was a picture of a dog excreting the likenesses of Kerry, Dasch(o)le, Harkin, Kennedy, Clinton, Clinton, etc., etc.
It's not. It's just a pooping dog. Had I known that, I wouldn't have asked! ;-)
Texas Parks & Wildlife outlawed that about 12 years ago. We are now required to have a valid Hunting License to pick these guys up.
"Cell phones save people. Guns kill people."
Except when cell phones kill people, and guns save people.
Oh, man . . . Hope he got the anti-venom in time . . . Or did they have to do a lot of scraping in his case, too?
"On vacation and you have to have a cell phone stuck to your ear give me a break.next time leave the kids home."
Never go on vacation without your cell phone. Especially if you are hiking in unfamilar territory. Each year cell phones save thousands of people who are lost or have a medical emergency.
They are also killers.
Most people are terrible drivers, put a cell phone in their hand and they are dangerous.....Many times cops and others at fatality scenes, find cell phones and people on the other end of the victims cell phones are still on the phone trying to figure what happened, and why they are not responding.....
'Cause of the round-about driving for treatment, it was day 3 before he got the anti-venom. The swelling started going down in a few hours. For rattlesnakes, you need this before 24 hours to prevent tissue death.
He's good to go, but won't be asking to go back out on the property.
If ANY Doc wants to do Wait'n Scrape, call around and drive somewhere else. If it means jumping on a plane to Florida, then so be it. Wait'n Scrape will mean you are crippled/maimed anywhere you got bit. If the Docs don't treat you right away, they are waiting.
This is my worthless mutt attacking a harmless oak snake. In the last year he has bayed up three Eastern Diamondbacks although none were over 3 feet long.
I would guess that if you could stand up to the licenses/permits scrutiny, they would get you for killing a protected species. :-/
I don't have to worry about getting in trouble usually because I just like to watch them and give them a wide berth when I run across one(unfortunately it's been years, they are so cool).
HEY!, DONT INSULT THE SNAKES!!!!...They can't help it!...JMO, Stupidity is no real excuse. :(
A hunting license to kill a rattlesnake? You are kidding! Is the Sweetwater event still held? Come to think of it I haven't heard anything about it in a while. Did they use gasoline fumes to get them out of their holes or was it something else?
Yep, I've seen pictures of hollowed out legs. Grotesque.
>>>>"cell phones with people on the other end trying to find out what happened">>>>>>
After a wreck the cell phone is still connected. Why do I not believe this.
Oh yes. Hunting License required and Game Wardens are about the city. It was the EPA that got gasoline prohibited, somebody talked too much.
My cousin got out of doing the round up about 15 years ago due to a buddy get'n bit and the Docs doing the wait'n scrape.
OK then, I revise my opinion of you :-)
Actually...Snakes can/do get overheated...so be kind to snakes, they are not Ba$%a*d liberals...they are one of nature misunderstood creatures.
I have never heard of this scrape & wait stuff. A rattlesnake bite is a serious event & people die from it. These are medical doctors in Texas that do this procedure? I am not believing this. Emergency rooms everywhere have anti-venom.
