Cell Phone Call Saves Girls Surrounded By Rattlesnakes Rattlesnake Trapper Finds 25 To 30 Snakes In Area

LIVINGSTON, Montana -- Two Colorado girls vacationing in Montana used a cell phone to call for help after finding themselves on a hillside infested with dozens of rattlesnakes.
Izzy Effler, 13, and Morgan Beadwell, 12, climbed a hill in Livingston to try to get cell phone reception.
However, while climbing, Izzy said a rattlesnake struck at her.
Morgan also reportedly stepped on a snake.
The girls then discovered that they were surrounded by six rattlers and used the phone to call for help, according to the report.
Brian Effler and his nephew eventually rescued the girls after shooting two of the snakes.
A rattlesnake trapper said he saw 25 to 30 snakes in the area.
The girls were not injured.

This year they also took along a half-case of snakes so that they wouldn't have to carry any scotch back with them.
These girls sound to me like they have stumbled on to the Democratic Headquarters for Montana. HMMMM...

Had a rattler do that to me, the sound was enough to stop my heart but watching it sway back and forth was scary. Grabbed the dogs and backed quickly away.

There is a type of Rattlesnake that WILL be aggressive. It is called the MOJAVE GREEN. I have encountered them in the west end of the Antelope Valley- west of Palmdale/Edwards AFB. We were riding downhill on a fire road. Snake was heading downhill also. Snake sensed us, turned around, and aggressively came uphill toward us. Other rider knew the danger better than I, and told me we had to turn around and get away from it, as it wouldn't just go off the trail and avoid us and the horses. Mojave Green is a real mean snake.
Copperheads without young hardly move. With young get ready to cover 10 feet quickly. Hope that the 10 feet is in the right direction. I always see Copperheads 10 or more feet away. Rattlesnakes same thing. Even harmless snakes I sense them. I've been like this since I was a kid.

Yup, people out here in California do stupid stuff like that all the time, lol! When I was a kid, I picked up every snake I ever saw (except a 6' bullsnake that surprised me once and got away before I could grab him). But that was central Kansas. Nary a venomous snake around. It just amazes me when people pick up rattlesnakes and don't take any extra care doing it. My wife treated a woman who picked up a baby rattler along the American River bikepath in Sacramento because she thought it was "cute." Almost died.
There is something you can do to make rattlesnakes come out of their holes. I have seen it done at the Sweetwater Rattlesnake Roundup but I can't quite remember. It seems like it is fumes from gasoline or somthing that they pump into the holes & the snakes bail out.

I live south of Livingston and had my own encounter with a rattler in my backyard...I blew it away with a .22 target pistol with .22 shot shells.
The rattlesnake I saw performing that snake dance was a small one 3-4 feet long. It was hissing louder than it was rattling. I thought my heart would stop I was so frightened. My aim was still good tho', I got 'em! HA!
Same here in SC, except it's usually used exclusively for water moccasins, the only snakes in the US that are really, really dangerous (as long as you don't step on any others). Those suckers are unnaturally aggressive.

I've had two up close and personal encounters with rattlers this hiking season. Both times I was stepping off the trail to let mountain-bikers pass. Both times they (the snakes, not the mt. bikers) had ample opportunity to bite me but didn't. I'm not afraid, but I'm glad I didn't step right on them.
And I would NEVER hike alone without a cell phone for that very reason!
This one was huge, it was on a little rise above my position, it was raised up to waist height on me. Scary and rattling like crazy, I was worried my dogs wouldn't listen to me but they ran back down the trail, I had to catch up to them.
