Cell Phone Call Saves Girls Surrounded By Rattlesnakes Rattlesnake Trapper Finds 25 To 30 Snakes In Area
POSTED: 1:41 pm EDT July 8, 2004 UPDATED: 2:19 pm EDT July 8, 2004
LIVINGSTON, Montana -- Two Colorado girls vacationing in Montana used a cell phone to call for help after finding themselves on a hillside infested with dozens of rattlesnakes.
Izzy Effler, 13, and Morgan Beadwell, 12, climbed a hill in Livingston to try to get cell phone reception.
However, while climbing, Izzy said a rattlesnake struck at her.
Morgan also reportedly stepped on a snake.
The girls then discovered that they were surrounded by six rattlers and used the phone to call for help, according to the report.
Brian Effler and his nephew eventually rescued the girls after shooting two of the snakes.
A rattlesnake trapper said he saw 25 to 30 snakes in the area.
The girls were not injured.

I once found myself witin inches the edge of a Diamondback den. Once the rattling started, I heard them all around me. Fortunately, I had my 410 with me and my buddy had is 12 gauge (he was actually on top of the den ... a big pile of rusted metal). We blasted at least 20 before backing out of there.
That was one of the spookiest moments I've ever experienced.

Cell phones are life savers. We use our cell phone to make calls only when we need to but...secure in the knowledge we have help at our fingertips. In this case these kids were fortunate to have had the cell phones as who knows what might have happened to them. By the way...who are you to tell people to leave their kids home? Why so mad?

I have always liked, been interested in and kept snakes, but I have never seen a rattler in the wild. I think it would be cool.
Cool, my A$$ The sound will stop your heart. While you are looking frantically for where it was coming from and how close it is to you and your dog/horse/leg you are also subconciously (sp) looking for the nearest DIEHARD battery to jump start your heart again.
I have come across them too many times in the past 17 years. NO FUN at all. Carry .38 with snake shot loaded when riding. Old heavy gun, but I don't care.
House about 1/2 mile away as crow flies is fairly new and over 5000 sq ft. Full inside swimming pool, etc. Really nice. Have a passle of young kids. They have discovered that house is built on top of rattlesnake den with an underground settlement of rocks. No one quite has the answer for snake eradication as of yet. Kids are not getting to play outside right now. Bummer.

The copperhead must have had young nearby.

Morgan also reportedly stepped on a snake.I hope the snake they stepped on wasn't "Old Floyd" of "Hudson & Landry" (Old Prospectors) fame.
Boy, I couldn't live like that!

It happened in the spring so you may be right. Also, it was near a creek. I've learned to watch for copperheads around water in the spring. I believe that's where they breed.
