The strange disappearance of Marine Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun, reportedly kidnapped in Iraq nearly three weeks ago, grows even more mysterious.
Senior Pentagon officials tell NBC News, a man claiming to be Hassoun, called his family in Lebanon and the U.S. embassy in Beirut, saying he was "released by his kidnappers somewhere in Lebanon" and that he was "waiting to be picked up."
But in Washington, Secretary of State Colin Powell said U.S. officials remain in the dark. "We have received reports that he may be in contact with various individuals and there are other reports that he might be in Lebanon. But we cannot confirm any of these at this time," said Powell.

AWOL is not a possibility?
It's pretty obvious by now that this guy wanted out and schemed up his kidnapping. Find him and court martial him for desertion, 20 years hard labor!
Good! This whole story stinks to high heavens.
This is certainly a strange story.
"Conclusion" and "may be" should not be used in the same sentence.
I hate it when I am right.
But, I bet ya dollars to donuts, he gave up that RECON platoon position to let them know he was defecting for real, and got free passage out of the country.
He looked to clean and neat in that hostage photo, and no sweat on his face, no bruises, nothing.
Compare it to that guy from Jersey and from Korea.
TRAITOR to the CORPS.
20 years? Are you a bleeding heart liberal? Shoot the coward.
He was probably the one responsible for the deaths of 4 Marines - That was the price he paid for his admission into the islamic jihadist terrorist organization.
Holy crap. was he related to the 4? I had not thought of that. If so, the Corps needs to adopt aummary execution. Jeezis.
Has he been missing for 30 days already? If not he hasn't deserted yet.
He wanted out and the possibility of him being dead would be a pretty good cover.
This is *almost* as wierd as the whole Nick Berg thing...
As far as I know, the only connection of him to the 4 is he went missing the same day.
Too much co-incidence, I would tie him down on an anthill and cover him in honey to let him slowly suffer to get it all out of him.
I wonder if our friend M. Moore has footage of interviews with this guy.
Your implied answer seems correct. His religion won over the USMC and his adopted country (USA). He is now a Jihadi.
With muslims their "religion" trumps everything....country, family, even their buddies. If this guy is a deserter I hope he will be tracked down and his Jordanian butt court martialed.
Better yet, maybe Nick Berg let him use his email address.
If he betrayed his brother Marines there will be plenty of volunteers for the firing squad.
Just to clarify, I'm almost postive I read that the report that he was missing was filed the same day the 4 Marines were killed but he actually went missing about two days before. That, to my mind, makes it even more likely he may have had some involvement.
