LONDON (AFP) - Soviet dictator Stalin was a madman who could have benefited from a psychiatrist's attention and millions of lives could have been saved, a British researcher claimed.
Stalin, who ruled Russia from 1924 until his death in 1953, suffered from dementia caused by heart attacks, according to Dr George El-Nimr.
"This (Stalin's dementia) might be an explanation for the florid paranoia, dimming of his superior intellect and the unleashing of his most sadistic personality traits," Nimr told the annual conference of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in Harrogate in northern England.
Nimr and two colleagues, Dr Baseem Habeeb and Dr Emad Sulib, discussed the consequences of madness on the behaviour of several 20th century political leaders.
They argued that undiagnosed dementia could affect the fate of nations, even the world.
Millions are estimated to have died as the result of Stalin's policies and in purges.

The rehabilitation of the stellar icons of the left continues..
Only if the shrink was named "Winchester" or "Remington".
Seems to me, the policy of building up our military, applied by Reagon, would probably have done the trick 30 years earlier if some leader was so inclined and able to do so.
Stalin was an inhuman butcher his whole life - just like every other one of the Soviet founders. The left constantly tries to lay the blame for Soviet communism's death toll on Stalin's supposed "insanity".
Lenin was no less the brute - he just died to early to kill as many as Stalin, and Trotsky was if anything MORE brutal then Stalin during his time under Lenin.
As long as the communist system was in place, tens of millions would have died no matter what.
I hear the Medical Offices of Heckler & Koch are pretty good also.
"Good shrink could have tamed Stalin"
Most likely he would have ended up as a dead shrink.
More leftist crap that continues to pretend that there is no such thing as evil, only dementia and mental problems in need of medical attention.
A single 168-grain dose of lead would have cured the communist bastard of any 'disease' that he had.
If the leftists had their way, most of us who posted on this board would be in "mental rehab" institutions.
And murderers like Stalin would be running the show.
Communism breeds and rewards vicious sadists and power-mad despots by denying freedom in governance and economy.
Why is the psychiatrist always the least sane person in the room?
Dr Georgie Patton had his cure...only we wouldnt listen...
Gen McArthur had the cure for Mao as well....and we wouldnt listen to him either...
What a different world it would have been.....with many fewer dead American soldiers...
Right. Because we can all see how therapy has made the world a much better place.
/sarcasm
Stalin would've driven the shrink nuts first.
Where do they post these jobs? You just sit around and make stuff up. The propagandist print and the morons lap it up.
Thank you. I would have posted the same thing if you hadn't. The Left is reluctant to even bad-mouth Stalin--I certainly didn't learn about his brutality in school--but they're quick to give him up in order to preserve the fantasy image they have of the Soviet Union.
Another lie they love: "The Soviet Union wasn't communism. Cuba isn't communism. They were and are a perversion of the glory of communism!" Right. Reminds me of people who say, "Communism sounds great on paper! It's just bad in practice!" I think it sounds bad on paper. I call people who say that On-Paper Communists.
Which is why we dodged a bullet when Howlgore failed to steal the Presidency.
Someone should tell the researcher that communism/progressivism/socialism/facism kills.
Agreed. Stalin was a gangster whose utility was primarily robbing banks to raise money for the cause. About the only real work he ever did was in Baku in the oilfields and stirring up strikes. I read somewhere that Lenin, upon his deathbed, was asked who he would choose as his successor, the response was "Anyone but Stalin".
Oh, come on. I think idealogically communism is great, in practice and with human nature, it is impossible. Too many lazy sobs.
