THE FOUNDATION

"The aim of every political constitution is, or ought to be, first to obtain for rulers men who possess most wisdom to discern, and most virtue to pursue, the common good of the society; and in the next place, to take the most effectual precautions for keeping them virtuous whilst they continue to hold their public trust." --James Madison, Federalist No. 57

INSIGHT

"The government is like a baby's alimentary canal, with a happy appetite at one end and no responsibility at the other." --Ronald Reagan "Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys." --P.J. O'Rourke "Those who are preoccupied with 'making a statement' usually don't have any statements worth making.' --Thomas Sowell "Crime expands according to our willingness to put up with it." --Barry Farber "If the next century does not find us a great nation...it will be because those who represent the...morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces." --James Garfield "Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right." --Henry Ford

UPRIGHT

"Liberty, freedom, and self-determination. Those goals are as worthy of our attention today as they were 228 years ago in a hot convention hall in Philadelphia. Just as devotion to those goals brought forth this great nation then, a renewed adherence to liberty can save our nation today. Our Founding Fathers felt freedom was worth their 'lives, fortunes, and sacred honor.' Do we?" --Ron Paul "This court seems incapable of admitting that some matters -- any matters -- are none of its business." --Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia "I believe very strongly that Saddam had relations with al-Qaeda." -- Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi responding to a "correction" by Tom Brokaw regarding the 9/11 Commission's "findings" "If Dems want honest elections, why did a Soros-backed group hire criminals to get out the vote?" --John Fund "A generation ago, there was not near the amount of sex, violence and profanity on television and in movies that there is today. But I still remember how my parents dealt with it. They would get up and turn the television off." --Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) "My friends, we are the good guys in this fight. The bad guys chop off the heads of the prisoners they take, and send the videotapes to the deceased's relatives. If Peter Jennings can come up with any examples of where we've done that, then maybe I'll join him worrying about how we're abusing detainees' rights." --Jay Bryant ++ "One thing is for sure: the extremists have faith in our weakness. And the weaker we are, the more they will come after us." --Tony Blair ++ "The War on Terror will not be won until America is united. And as long as Democrats target the Bush administration -- not the terrorists -- as the enemy, we are in trouble." --Oliver North

This week's "Sagacity" Award: "[President Bush and Saddam Hussein] are very different people serving very different purposes. They both have very equally narrow views about how to solve problems and it is all about power, the struggle for oil and the struggle for world domination, and at the end of the day, are they that different?... I don't want to equate George Bush with Saddam Hussein. I believe that George Bush and Saddam Hussein are both behaving in an irresponsible manner, so in that respect, they're alike." --Madonna, who now calls herself "Esther", equating President Bush to Saddam
Finally, good advice from a celebrity... "Stop listening to celebrities. They do what they do for money -- that's all. I don't even know why you're listening to me. I've done commercials for both Coke and Pepsi. Truth is, I can't even taste the difference, but Pepsi paid me last, so there it is." --Dave Chappelle

SHORT CUTS

"The only way we've come up with to distinguish [between Saddam Hussein and Michael Moore] is that Saddam is the thin one." --James Taranto ++ "I can understand the point of being Michael Moore: There's a lot of money in it. What's harder to figure out is the point of being a devoted follower of Michael Moore." --Mark Steyn "According to a recent New York Times poll, after $60 million in warm and fuzzy TV ads about Kerry, 40 percent of Americans have no opinion of him. In other words, the ads are working! So Kerry will be sitting out the actual campaign this year." --Ann Coulter 'That's not a lie. It's a terminological inexactitude.' --Alexander Haig

David Letterman.... "Top Questions Ralph Nader Asked Potential Running Mates": Are you here because you lost a bet?; If I pick you, do you promise to vote for us?; In case anybody asks, can you think of a reason I'm running?; Are you sure you won't be intimidated by my dazzling charisma?; Is it okay if I pay you in grocery coupons?; Isn't this a step down for you, Mr. Gore?; Do you get nervous speaking in front of groups of 8 to 12 people?; Are you comfortable being the answer to a trivial pursuit question?; Wanna drop out of the race and go to Massachusetts to get hitched?

Jay Leno.... Ralph Nader [recently] named his running mate. It's Green Party activist Peter Camejo. Camejo is actually a Spanish word that means "no votes"! .... Former President Ronald Reagan's son, Ron Reagan Jr., has attacked President Bush saying he made a terrible mistake in Iraq. President Bush [was] furious -- he said, "What does the son of a former president know about Iraq?" .... In his book, Bill Clinton talks about the point where Hillary started to laugh again. It was when he told her "Look, I'll never cheat on you again. I promise." Apparently she got hysterical. ....

The New York Post is reporting...that Clinton now feels he has two more autobiographies left to write. That's what I love about Clinton -- he's the only guy in the world who has three different versions of his life story. One for him, one for Hillary, one for the grand jury.
