July 6, 2004 -- The Bloomberg administration might be having second thoughts about promoting an experimental high school serving gay and lesbian students. The Department of Education's budget halts the planned expansion of the controversial Harvey Milk HS in Greenwich Village, according to funding figures obtained by The Post.
Enrollment at Harvey Milk HS was scheduled to jump to 170 students in September, from 100 students this past school year, when it converted from a small program to a sanctioned, stand-alone high school.
The city put $3.2 million into renovations so the facility could accommodate the rapid two-year expansion.
But the preliminary city spending plan sets aside funding for only 100 students the same as last year.
The school had a rocky year. Some transgender students were arrested for a string of robberies while posing as prostitutes.
The city was sued by critics for allegedly running a segregated school.
Schools Chancellor Joel Klein's office insisted the budget is not an attempt to cap the school's enrollment.
"These are projections based on expected enrollment, not on any policy decision . . . not to expand the program," said Klein spokeswoman Michele McManus.
William Salzman, the founding principal of Harvey Milk, said the plan all along was to bring enrollment to 170 students in September and to 200 by the fall of 2005.

Where is this suit in process? Was it tried?
I think I can honestly state that nothing quite like that ever happened in my high school. Toilet papering, yes. Armed robbery by cross-dressing prostitutes, no.
I dont know. Have not heard anything about it lately.
Little boy blew --
And his father beat the $hit out of him.
I hear you. Thieving, cross dressing hookers was never a problem in my high school either...go figure.
And of course anyone opposing this abomination is an intolerant bigot homophobic hatemonger.
That's a lot of money just to drill a few more "glory holes".
One of my VERY lib friends at work thought this school was "pure discrimination" and "WRONG". (her words)
What next...a school for people with green eyes? People under 5'2? The whole concept of a school for gay teenagers is NUTS.
This is a school dedicated to the proposition that these CHILDREN will engage in a specific method of recreational sex.
IOW an orgasms for children tax dollar paid program.
...I wouldn't live anywhere else. :)
lol. Our tax dollars at work.....
Lets see. 3.2 mm for 100 kids = 32K per kid.
Wow the gov sure knows how to spend our money
This will be the lead story on Euronews and CNNeurope.
Nothing wrong with a school like this. If you are a parent in New York City and must send your kids to the public schools, then $3.2 million is a very small price to pay to have a bunch of dysfunctional freaks removed from your kids' classrooms.
Thats ONE way to look at it....lol.
I PAY for that school through my NYC property and income taxes. Since these kids are under 18, the gov promotes SAME sex pedophilia
It didn't happen IN the school, it was done by people who were registered as students at the school. And I seriously doubt that the perps would have foregone such activities, had they been registered at what passes for a normal high school in NYC.
This itsy-bitsy fringe school gets far too much attention from conservatives. Sometimes I seriously think it was set up by the socialists for the sole purpose of distracting the all too easily distracted religious conservatives from what's going on at the huge regular high schools in NYC, involving hundreds of thousands of students and hundreds of millions of dollars, and academic standards that are certainly no higher (and quite probably lower) than the standards at this tiny oddball school. If so, their plan sure is working beautifully.
