For those who aren't aware of the significance of the coin, it's a unit esprit de corps thing. When at the bar or some other event you show your coin to show you belong to the unit, if you don't have your coin, you get to buy everyone drinks. But it's really about showing your loyalty to your unit and branch of service.
In my 20 years, I got about 6 coins. If I didn't earn them, I didn't want them, although there were some damn nice ones out there!
It appears that every unit in the military sent him one by the looks of the rack behind him.
