Political pundits today hailed the selection of North Carolina Senator John Edwards as the running mate for Senator John Kerry as adding much needed levitas to the Democratic Party ticket.
Dan Rather opined that, even though Mr. Edwards was adequately unpopular in his own state that he dared not run for reelection there, his "youthful, telegenic appearance will bring a certain levitas to the Democratic ticket."
Katie Couric, exuding the perky yet cute analytical ability for which she is so justly acclaimed, said "Edwards' levitas will more than balance what otherwise is a tedious, pontificating, and patronizing ticket. When asked to define "levitas," which means "lightness, levity, or fickleness," Ms. Couric replied: "How should I know? I'm just repeating my morning fax from the DNC." When asked to define any other words she had used which were at least three syllables in length, Ms. Couric was similarly at a loss.
The editors of the New York Times wrote that "any reference by Republicans to Mr. Edwards' youth and inexperience, or any question raised by them with regard to his fitness to stand one heartbeat away from the Presidency, would be an attack ad and an insult to the memories of those who lost their lives on 9/11 and their loved ones, especially the Jersey Girls." The Times editors also opined that "Mr. Edwards lack of experience only enhanced the levitas which is his most attractive feature." In a later publication, the Times' editors denied that their repeated use of the word "levitas" was evidence of additional plagiarism at the Times or of the sharing of talking points by liberal pundits and publications.

I actually liked (and still like, to some degree) Jack Kemp but I'm hoping that Edwards is about as helpful to Kerry as Kemp was to Dole.

First and foremost, the "Jersey Girls" can kiss my hairy old a$$. They've been pimping their grief long enough. Secondly, since the vice-president isn't primairly effective until something happens to the president, those who are ecstatic over the Edwards pick seem to be inadvertantly hoping for the death of John Kerry.

Bob Dole lost because of Bob Dole, not his choice of running mate. If Abe Lincoln had been been his running mate, he would still have lost. Jack Kemp is a much more accomplished politician than John Edwards.

Yes, Bob Dole lost because of Bob Dole but there were things that Jack Kemp said and did that were not very helpful. He was much weaker than he should have been, given his resume.

Now THAT is funny, as well as ironic: referring to a personal injury class action lawyer as a breast implant. We'll have to stop calling him the Breck Girl and start referring to him as the Silicon Sidekick.
