July 6, 2004 -- EXCLUSIVE
John Kerry has chosen Rep. Richard Gephardt, the veteran congressman from Missouri, to be his running mate, The Post has learned.
Gephardt, 63, a 28-year veteran of the House of Representatives, could be named by the presumptive Democratic nominee as the party's vice-presidential candidate as soon as today.
The Massachusetts senator was set to announce the winner of the veep-stakes at a rally this morning in Pittsburgh, according to several reports last night.
With the July 26 Democratic convention in Boston looming, Kerry is looking for some advantage in the polls, and is hoping his choice of running mate will be the answer.

That is such poor strategy for the Dems. Picking a union guy is like picking a black candidate--they don't need to do it because they are going to get that group's votes anyway. Knowing Dick Gephardt has been a "friend" of labor for more than 25 years isn't going to make a Republican-voting union member (whose numbers may be as high as 40% of the unions) vote for Kerry. Why should Kerry worry about getting the union money when he has Soros' money? And, if it's about getting out the vote--how is Gephardt going to get out the black vote? The hispanic vote? Gephardt's gay daughter will get out the gay vote--but they are Kerry's anyway and she may keep religious Democrats at home. Gephardt was part of the House Banking Scandal and makes the ticket over-balanced with Washington insiders.
If Bush does lose, this is a very dangerous ticket. An arrogant elitest President with a class-warring Veep would be insufferable.

Put down the Koran and step away from the Hadiths... you can't read everything into numbers. Kerry/Gephardt is Mondale/Ferraro recycled, nothing more.

I wonder if this is the reason Bush has expanded to a 8.1% lead over Kerry in the Iowa Electronic Markets race as of 3AM CST.

And THAT is precisely WHY Kerry took Gephardt as V.P.! See? You actually do know what's what...so stop making up silly stories to scare yourself with.Or,if you must do that...go build a bobfire, make somes s'mores, and tell your silly Hillary stories to yourself.:-)

Don't be overconfident! Beat the bushes for President Bush and act as though he were down 15 points.
To: HarryCaul
From your mouth to God's ear--let's pray that Bush does win. This is the most important election in our lifetimes and Kerry in the White House with Gephardt waiting in the wings would sacrifice the greatness America has earned in the past 100 years.

Two more white males for the "party of diversity"
To: Jet Jaguar
Well, I think the new Dem plan is simply to sow ill will for the rest of the campaign season. They've decided they cant win, so they've thrown in the towel, sacrificing those they wont miss.
So now they just try to undercut Bush to gain in the congressional elections this year and in 06. And of course 08 is now wide open.
Yeah, I really do think Gephardt is that bad. :-)

Me either, they're obviously having traffic problems. Probably all the weeping Dims bemoaning the fact that, if this story is true, the GOP has just effectively won the 2004 presidential election.

i think DU has self-destructed... i haven't been able to get in there for the last five minutes...They're still questioning the veracity of the "scoop". One poster said it was "hastily written" and "couched with too many ambiguities", I laughed so hard my monitor began to rattle on the desk. LOL

Here's a bigger version of the Metro Edition New York Post cover for this morning. You can read the date on this one. Again, this shows that the Post got a hard, confirmable scoop, one that made them comfortable enough to completely redo the front page and announce Gephardt in the Late City Final.
(For anyone who can't see the image, it's a PNG file. Some older browsers can't handle it.)
