Indian restaurant's face legal threat over playing music
London, July 5 (UNI) Indian restaurants in Britain are under threat of a legal crackdown on their choice of background music.
Majority of the restaurants play Hindi film songs but some restaurants in London particularly have been playing Bhangra or Indipops.
A demand is now being raised that the Indian restaurants pay performance fee for the music they play. If they fail to do so, they will be liable to court action taken against them by the official collectors of music royalties, the Performing Rights Society (PRS) and Phonographic Performance Limited.
It is as yet unclear whether the stores and restaurants that are not classified Indian curry restaurants would also be similarly liable.
HuH ?
If you want to play a copyrighted song for the public copyright holders must be paid their fee or the courts will collect it for them.
Oh. That go for Indipop here, too?
I remember hearing about this about 20 years ago. A small local hardware store was owned by a friend who said the record industry group sought to have them pay royalties for piping in the local easy listening radio station. Apparently Muzak was invented for that reason and the subscription a company paid to the service went partly to pay the royalties due. He stopped the background music entirely.
Indian Restaurant's what?

Me like Indipop.
And what about this "Indian curry restaurants" thing?
Seems like discrimination between the "curry restaurants" and the "non-curry restaurants". I'd sue.
I'll bet his business went right down the drain.
..................Indipop.......good.
face
what has this got to do with free republic?
The applies only to songwriter/composer royalties, not performer.
He could have legally played the classical music station.
Man, I could go for some curry, maybe some vindaloo,
some nan, a stack of popadums......Mmmmmmmmm.
And then some ice cream!
absolutely nothing, but that's true of most articles and posts.
Would you like some mustard on that dog of hot?
?
What does a shark attack have to do with FR?
No. Not "face." Indian restuarants don't have faces, and even if this one did, there is no verb in the sentence.
..................Indipop.......good.
Is that anything like a Tootsie Pop? Curry center, perhaps?
"Indian restuarants don't have faces"
This one apparently does
