'Fahrenheit' Banned in Iowa Theaters for Inciting Terrorism July 4, 2004
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Despite expanding its run to 1,710 screens nationwide, "Fahrenheit 9/11" won't be shown at select theaters in Iowa.
R.L. Fridley, the president of the Des-Moines-based Fridley Theatres in Iowa and Nebraska, is refusing to show the incendiary documentary, claiming it incites terrorism, reports the AP.
"Fahrenheit" is a highly critical look at President George W. Bush's connections with high-ranking Saudi families, including Osama Bin Laden, and questions his actions and motivations regarding the war in Iraq.
In an email to his company managers, Fridley stated that the company does not "play political propaganda films from either the right or the left."
The message also continues to state, "Our country is in a war against an enemy who would destroy our way of life, our culture and kill our people. These barbarians have shown through (the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001) and the recent beheadings that they will stop at nothing. I believe this film emboldens them and divides our country even more."
"Fahrenheit" won best picture at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival in May and held the top spot at the box office on its opening weekend, breaking numerous records.
This guy gets it.
Wish, NYC would do the same. The irony is chilling that it is selling out in theatres over there.
...but the article title is misleading. Iowa HAS NOT banned the movie. Just a certain set of movie theaters in Iowa that Fridley is in charge of.
This is good news. We need other theatre owners to follow suit. This movie is seditious, and should be treated as such!
Either the author of the article was extremely stupid or it is a deliberate attempt to sow the seeds of a so-called government suppression of free speed to anyone gullible enough to believe it.
Yeah I couldnt find any connection to the governor. As I understand it GKC theatres aren't showing the movie either.
Much like the Reagan movie produced by CBS, a popular outrage was wrongly connected to the republican party.
But a theatre owner deciding, "This crap isn't playing in my theatre" is just as much free speech as Moore making the movie was.
The title of the article is misleading. There is no statewide ban of this movie in Iowa. It's just a ban of the movie in a chain of movie houses in Iowa. You can still see the movie in Iowa, just not in this movie house chain that banned it.
I'm originally from MN. MN and IA have had their fun razzing each other...
Now, I HAVE to respect them.
This is going to undue YEARS of poking fun!
Good for you, Iowa!
I can handle that ;-)
5.56mm
The theatre owner can show any movies he wishes in his theatres. If Michael Moore wants to show his dreck in Iowa he can find different theatres. Heck, he can rent a hall and show the movie himself.
But this is in no way government censorship.
"The irony is chilling that it is selling out in theatres over there."
this is actually typical of the self loathing and self destructive mindset of hte left. They want to be defeated because their "intellectual perspective" tells them that this is what is right.
This is why the left always sides with America's enemies.
I just checked the online listings....
Mikey Reifenstahl's little movie is running in one theatre in Dubuque, three theatres in Des Moines and three theatres in Cedar Rapids. I can only assume that it is playing in other Iowa communities as well.
How about both?
Finally some sanity, in a crazy world-----R.L. Fridley---THANK YOU!
Yesterday, I sent a note to www.friedleytheatres.com thanking the owner for taking this stand.
