Deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein is "very likely" to be hanged if convicted on charges of war crimes and genocide, Britain's former special envoy to Iraq said.
Sir Jeremy Greenstock said the Iraqi authorities would reinstate capital punishment as the ultimate sanction in their criminal code. The punishment was suspended during the coalition's rule of the country.
Saddam faced a range of charges including the gassing of Iraqi Kurds and the 1990 invasion of Kuwait when he made a preliminary appearance before a court in Baghdad last week.
Interviewed on BBC 1's Breakfast with Frost, Sir Jeremy said: "If he (Saddam) is found guilty, I think it is very likely that he would be executed.
"The Iraqis will change the law from the occupation period. Obviously the British are against that in principle. But this is now an Iraqi trial.
"The important thing I think, internationally and indeed for Iraqis, is that this trial should be a fair one, under recognised and acceptable rules of procedure."

Ping!
Preferably over a working shredder with a perforated rope.
Big ole bump!
In public, it is to be hoped.
Oh, wrapped in pigskin.
There goes another liberal icon...
Sooner, rather than later. Some of his cohorts must be begging to testify against him in exchange for life rather than death.
I won't be dancing until he's dangling from a rope. I keep having this niggling feeling that one morning we'll wake upto a headline such as "SADDAM ESCAPES." I guess I still don't have a lot of faith in the newly formed Iraqi government. All it would take is a couple of Saddam loyalists to pull it off.
Nothing newsworthy is happening in the world this weekend and pundits are lame. Let's hope it stays that way.
The Sooner, the better, then he can not rear his ugly head to harm another living soul again.
I am compelled to agree.
String him up by the 'nads for a while first.
Actually hanged, then wrapped in pigskin would be preferrable after lopping off all of his limbs, starting with toes and working up the torso; then cauterizing each appendage that was lopped off to keep him from bleeding to death or losing consciousness.
Sacre bleu! The French will never accept this! Mon dieu!
I still don't know what was up with the Judge letting him mouth off and berate him like that. I don't like that at all.
The moment he raised his finger in a defiant posture he should have got a rifle butt to the face.
However, our bed-wetter friends over at DUmmyground would just be anguished to no end seeing one of their hero's "abused".
Meanwhile, when Saddam was filling up his mass graves they were sipping their Mocha's talking about Mobey with not a care in the world...
Announce in advance the date, time and location, and let nature take its course.
Of course I'm not completely without mercy. I'd give him a penknife to defend himself.
I think you're right. The Iraqi people will not be able to close the book on the terror of the Saddam era until he is dead. If he gets anything less than death, the Iraqi people and their domestic enemies may see it as a sign of weakness in the new government. Neither is good.
If the people have confidence in the new government, then stability and freedom have a shot.
