Peachtree Roadrace Sponsors Baghdad 10k
FOX-ATL | 7/4/04 | FOX-ATL

For those who don't think that things are settling down in Iraq, the Peachtree Roadrace sponsored a 10k in Baghdad today - an activity you don't normally schedule for an uncontrolled war zone.

The men's winner was a Air Force LT from Wright-Patterson and the women's winner was a Austrilan Army Capt. Unfortunately, I was not able to get the names of either in this segment shown during coverage of the Atlanta Peachtree race. Perhaps someone else can verify / contribute additional details.

Happy Independence Day!

Were there two races today in Iraq?

Today, July 4, 2004, Independence Day, there was a road
race in Iraq. Unlike when Saddam and his evil sons ruled,
at the end, the losers were neither executed nor maimed.

In Baghdad, Iraq, U.S. Army heroes carry company flags
at the team start of a 3.1-mile road race at Camp Victory,
hours ago, Sunday, July 4, 2004.

The Winner. In Baghdad, Iraq, U.S. Army 1st Cavalry Spc. Steven Phillips, of Perry, NY,

If they were feeling particularly ornery, they could organize an Armed Forces Olympics. 8^)

They should have some indigenous events:

- Shoot and scoot, drive Toyota pickups and fire RPGs at multiple targets for time and accuracy.

- IED setting and locating (team event).

- Run the roadblock.

- Lying
