DESPERATE MEASURES
Could it be that desperation is setting in a bit more, well, desperately in the Kerry campaign? Up till now, most political tea leaf readers had Kerry announcing his decision on vice president coming the week of July 11. But recent polling numbers may have Kerry advisers changing those plans.
According to a Kerry campaign source, Sen. John Edwards, Rep. Dick Gephardt, Gov. Tom Vilsack, Gen. Wesley Clark, and "a surprise candidate" were each contacted on Wednesday and told to be prepared for an announcement with Kerry as early as July 6. Each short-lister provided the campaign with updated contact and travel information for the July 4 weekend and afterward.
"It's accelerated. It all began happening on Wednesday," says the campaign source. "For the past week we've been told there was no decision, then all of sudden, this. We've been sifting through some cruddy poll numbers, so maybe that has something to do with it."
Cruddy indeed. New polling from a number of sources, including internal polling, has Kerry struggling and even lagging in a race that by all rights he should be leading by low double digits.
"When you factor in a president down in the 40s of approval, and a candidate that many people claim they don't know much about, there is no way we should be losing Michigan and Pennsylvania. But we are," says the Kerry adviser. "We've spent $50 million and have nothing to show for it. Not a single point."
According to the source, the thinking goes that a complete Kerry ticket out in public sooner rather than later should energize things enough in the media and the base to give Kerry the uptick his people have been waiting for.
There was no indication of who the "surprise" candidate was. "It could be Hillary. It's assumed that she has been vetted on a separate track from the others. At least that's the talk. No one here knows for sure," says the source.
Edwards was due in Boston after the July 4th holiday for campaign appearances, at least one of which was to be with Kerry.
According to a Clinton Senate staffer in New York City, late on Wednesday, a staff colleague called from the road and indicated that "the Senator may need to change some things around next week." "But we weren't told to do anything for now," says the staffer.
Awww. My point wasn't to point out a reason for you to stay away, my point was to demonstrate that some of us do get it.
*sigh* Oh well :(
Qwinn
I am fairly sure that after Kerry's defeat, and after the Clintonites run out of steam, Ford and those like him will take over the leadership of the wrecked, demoralised Democrats, push it firmly to the centre and rebrand it.

Keep your eye on the bouncing ball....focus please.
Like it!! ;^)
And that I appreciate. I have never maintained that the vast majority holds rather unsavory attitude towards black people. But enough of them do.
Put yourself in my shoes for a moment. When you keep reading and/or hearing over and over and over that the GOP and conservatives shouldn't waste their time in trying to campaign for black votes (notice I said campaign, yet that would be interpreted as pander). That blacks would never consider voting for them. That blacks want nothing but handouts and welfare (even those the overwhelming majority of blacks are not on welfare). That conservatives should shore up their base and their base only, excluding black people. And on and on it goes.
How could I in good conscience link up with such people?
$710.96... The price of freedom.
If kerry doesn't pick the hildebeast, you can bet on her intentional sabotage of his campaign to set her up for that 2008 run.
1. Pick Hillery and be overshadowed and elbowed out.
2. Don't pick Hillery and watch her torpedo your campaign so she can run in 2008.
Sounds like a Win-Win situation for Bush.
How often have you heard people bemoaning the fact that they couldn't come up with the 5 or 6 perfect answers on the spot in real time? They can come up with the right response all on their own--they're not stupid--but they are momentarily stupid trying to respond "on their feet".
There's a reason she only has scripted appearances.
I do not want John Kerry to win! But I am trying to be honest. All I hear is Iraq was wrong, and anyone but Bush everywhere I go.I try to explain but people seem to have there minds made up unless Bush does a major media bliss on Iraq and the economy which I think he should.
I can understand that and did quit writing for a publication because of it. A well known southern California dude of Balkan heritage went on and on in his column in that publication about how "blacks" call each other "ho'," and so on. I told him about the value of using quantifiers ("some," "most," etc.) and that mature people in some conservative black communities discourage that kind of talk. ...told him about the same kind of name calling in Italian communities--"daygo" and all that. ...told him that there's a sign on an Italian dog food business in the Midwest that says, "Daygo for it!" The writer still didn't get it, and the Editor wan angry at me for arguing with a celebrity writer.
Perceptions brought on by the spoiled rotten media people don't die easy.
As for what people in this thread are arguing about,...
Of course President Bush should campaign for black conservative votes, as he campaigns for all conservative votes. If there were a reason for him to switch running mates at this time (which move would be in error), a black running mate who is a real man would be fine. ...someone like Ward Connerly, maybe. But I think it would be a mistake for him to switch running mates at this time.
I'm still a Republican, but then we all have our issues.
It is going to be her. I'd really like to be wrong, but it's too perfect that both of their books came out before the summertime and the Clinton machine has been in full swing for months now.Hillary honored as a Humanitarian by receiving the first "Maxine Postal Award for Humanitarianism" on March 13th of 2004; 2 days before that,Hillary joined the "Americans for Gun Safety Foundation and the National Network Against Domestic Violence, which are trying to pressure local, state, and federal authorities to strictly enforce the gun restrictions on protective orders"; Hillary giving speeches in Seattle last week, California a few months ago,The Council on Foreign Relations in Jan/Feb.
If that isn't enough, does anyone remember her "near threat" to John Kerry earlier this year? Please go here if you've forgotten: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1091390/posts
As I said, I hope I am wrong.
I almost hope it IS Hillary. Remember how she avoided the press and got away without having to answer questions when running for Senator?
Here is a site you will like, Happy.

N.Y. isn't Mass.and GOD forbid Hillary is Kerry's V.P. And they win ( a double no,for that...ain't gonna happen!),then Pataki would send a GOPer in to replaces her vacated Senate seat.Hillary is far more politically intelligent than tinfoiled FREEPERS and she won't go for it.Besides.shes can't bring anything to the ticket. Most swing voters hate her,no matter what Happy seems to "think".
And it will NOT be Hillary.
And Hispanic voters don't give give a dang about Hillary.
And many blacks don't either.
