I am not trying to be funny here. Can someone tell me why the Iraqi's buried their fighter jets in sand?

Here is another.

========= Chemical Warhead found in Kirkuk =============

Chemical warhead found at an Iraqi air base, marked with a green band,
the symbol for chemical weaponry
. Trace amounts of a nerve agent were found
at two spots along the ~meter-long warhead. These amounts are consistent with
leakage from the chemically armed weapon. A 13-foot missile was found next to it.

BUT... have no fear, they WILL NOT get press, either.
Tonight the news special is on Saddam-Hero of NBC
Pierre Jennings reporting on Saddam's victimhood as seen through his expertise as a high school dropout,
and Dan Rather will show another Panty-Hat Special on CBS
hoping to incite a few more bloody American beheadings for the July 4th weekend and his friend.

Would you describe those "missiles" as rockets or artillery shells? Based on the launch vehicle, they they look more like shells. But I know nothing about military hardware . . .

The new media spin is:
Evidence of limited amounts unconventional weapons has been found, but this was to be expected. They posed no threat to national security.

They will *never* call these weapons WMD. Never.

Just a guess: the Iraqis figured they were hopelessly outmanned in the air, so rather than have the planes shot down or bombed on the ground, they buried them in the sand. They had virtually no capability for an air war.

I think they'd be classified as artillery, in the sense that they're probably shells that are propelled by unguided rockets.

Correct: the evening news will highlight Saddam's comment that "Bush is the real criminal" and will emphasize the difficulty - even the impossibility (to hear them tell it)- of assembling a strong case against Saddam.

Does anyone know if these are the same shells that were talked about last week, when a dozen knew sarin shells were mentioned? Or are these in addition to those?

Maybe the administration is accumulating this information for release later in the summer, at a press conference specifically called to address the latest findings of the WMD group

Or maybe they're waiting for the campaign to begin in earnest. W's a great poker player, and has shown himself willing and able to cut his opponents off at the knees.

It's not like this stuff hasn't already been in the MSM -- but they're still repeating the mantra that there were no WMDs. The best approach in that case is to time the announcement for a moment where it has again reached a crescendo, especially if John F'n Kerry is being particularly obnoxious about it.

In that scenario, you don't want to toss it out too early -- you want the buzz to carry through into the run-up to the election.

My guess is that they were expecting a replay of '91 where we destroyed any plane left on the tarmac, regardless of whether it was being scrambled.

Back then they evacuated some planes over to Iran as well. They thought that we'd slap them around for awhile but leave Sadaam in power. He wanted his toys for oppressing the Iraqi people after we left.

I almost have the feeling that even if we found a warehouse with 300 shiny white intercontinental missiles equipped with nerve gas, it wouldn't be enough to totally penetrate the "no WMD" line that's been circulated for the past year.

Better yet, why not do it in the form of a short documentary? The campaign has millions of dollars. It would make a nice autumn presentation.

Ther story refers to some as 82mm. My guess is that these are mortar rounds.

Reuters just picked it up. However they describe them as old pre-1991 Gulf War One munitions. Yeah right! Hard to spin this!

Well, if the missiles were stacked neatly you couldn't really call it a stockPILE, now could you?

In an Oct 3, 2003, Article from Rueters, Polish troops found French Built anti-aircraft missiles in Iraq to which France had denied selling them the missiles.
