"Let me go out on a limb with an early prediction on this one... I've really doubt that Kerry would pick anybody whose political star might shine brighter than his - they tend to pick people who will not try to eclipse them within the political spotlight.

I don't think he will ever even seriously consider Hillary, and I even doubt Edwards. I think he'll pick a good, reliable "second stringer", not a potential rival."

Yep, Gephardt fits the position you describe perfectly.

And there was never any chance Hillary Clinton would be on this ticket...but til Kerry makes that official, the "Hillary's Coming! Hillary's Coming! Run for Your LIVES!" crowd won't stop.

In that case I support Kerry's decision to name Hillary if it comes to that.

"It would be a mistake for Hillary too. No way she would run in 2008 if she was the losing VP in 04."

Why not?

He should just WAIT till the convention. It would add an element of mystery and excitment.

Great for ratings..

Are you nuts? Our political history is replete with losing VP candidates becoming the front runner in the next presidential cycle. Muskie became the frontrunner in 72 after being the VP candidate in 68. Mondale became the frontrunner in 1984 after being defeated for vp in 1980. Henry Cabot Lodge became the front runner in 1964 after losing with Nixon in 1960.

This is why Edwards so desperately wants to be Kerry's vp, and the Clintons do not want him to get it. He threatens PIAPS in 2008.

A great surprise pick could be Dan Rather.

"Dems excited by prospects for VP"

Translation: Democrats who know that John Kerry is a total boring loser, will be buoyed by any VP candidate who can actually breathe. Rumored to be on the short list are Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein and Hitlery Clinton.

I would like to see Gephardt, since he still has some skeletons in his closet. Did the "summer home" on the North Carolina coast ever get explained? My understanding was that there was no way he could have afforded it.

You're correct. Also Hillary isn't interested in being VP.

She wants to be Queen King.

One dead guy and two unconvicted murderers. Nope, nothing there to prevent any of them running as demoncRATs.

Correct. Not Hillary!ous (Plus she made an out and out call to Marxism in SF three days ago...)

But they are Close.

Jane Harman. Hillary lite. Kerry is looking for applause from the press, for picking a woman, and porbably thinks that exacerbating the gender gap helps him.

Harman is the Ranking Member on House Intel.

This is a foreign policy election.

Doubtful that he would take Hillary:
1. He could not control her.
2. She would overshadow him.
3. She would continue to raise her own money.
4. She would compete aginst him for his second term
5. She would constantly contradict him
6. Big interests will oppose her

--It'll be Max Cleland. From the South, counters Zell Miller (both from Georgia), Vietnam Vet, Senate experience, disabled, beef against Republicans for "questioning his patriotism".--

Cleland was, and is very unpopular here in GA, I dont see that helping at all.

Dont matter who he picks, F'nkerry will never ever carry the South, I belive even with Edweirds. Algore couldnt even carry Tenn, and if you cant carry the conservative South, you cant be president.

I vaguely remember something about a summer home on the east coast, but don't remember the specifics.

I think Gephardt will be the choice because he's a known quantity, has union backing (its not nearly as important as it was two decades ago, but it will help Kerry) and most importantly, little dick gephardt has absolutely nothing to lose....having already lost twice in his attempts at becoming the nominee, and having supervised personally the loss of the House of Reps after a forty year run.

Edwards has his eye on the 08 nomination, and as Lieberman demonstrated this time around, being on the losing ticket doesn't help in the future.
