It is a sad, that is a big number. That map is used for maximum emotional effect, though. Notice the areas in white: Every major populated area. The size of the red area could have been much smaller if the areas included major cities, which it does not.
Anyway the tragic point being made is that there have been 44 million abortions, and that is sad.
It is wrong- you will notice no large cities fall into the "red area." In other words, they chose the least populous counties to shade red to make the highest impact and illustrate a point.
