Report: Suspected al-Qaeda member planned to blow up Panama Canal... Why bother? Jimmah Carter gave it away years ago.

What's next? The Mississippi River? Maybe one of the Great Lakes.

No surprise there -- though in reality I suspect the target was not "the canal," but one or more locks on the canal. Not a bad choice, as targets go. The Suez Canal would also be an excellent target.

If GWB is not winning the war against terrorism, should we assume this fellow had a change of heart or turned himself in ?????

Why...of course, at least according to the lefty media, this news cannot possibly be true if the Administration is not able to produce the Panama Canal, the device or bomb, the would be bomber, his confession and at least a congressional fact finding from a democrate dominated committee.

but - to liberals - blowing up the panama canal seems so insignificant to the abuses which we have learned took place at Abu Gharaib.
To: areafiftyone
He'd never have gotten past the 15,000 elite Chinese paratroopers that patrol both sides of the 'Canal.

Blow it up huh? They would need to pack some serious explosives if they are going to do that. I wouldn't worry about them blowing it up.

Still looking for more info. I hate one liners. Drudge does that and so does Sky News.

Ramming a ship full of explosives into one of the locks?Or just sink one, as was done in the Suez canal.
This would be a bit of a departure, since Al Qaeda usually wants to kill people, not just damage us economically.

Suspected al-Qaeda member planned to blow up Panama Canal: Honduras
Wed Jun 30 2004 14:53:29 ET
A man believed to be a member of al-Qaeda plotted to blow up the Panama Canal, a spokesman for the Honduran security ministry told the AFP Wednesday.
Leonel Sauceda confirmed Security Minister Oscar Alvarez's comments to local media that the 38-year-old suspect -- identified as Adnan Guishar El Shukrijumah, or Jafar al-Tayar, who was in Honduras late last month -- "planned to plant explosives in the Panama Canal to hamper boat traffic in the area."
Alvarez's remarks were published in the daily La Tribuna on Wednesday, along with four photos of the suspect. International intelligence officials have offered a five-million-dollar reward for information leading to his capture.
Alvarez did not say when Shukrijumah entered or left the country, nor through which country he had traveled. But Sauceda said he was in Honduras on May 27.
Shukrijumah holds passports from Trinidad and Tobago, Canada and Guyana, according to the authorities
