Bob Hope immigrated to the U.S. when he was 4 years old, and like millions of other would-be Americans, Ellis Island was the first U.S. soil he stepped on.
Now, Reps. Elton Gallegly, R-Calif., and Elliot Engel, D-N.Y., have written other members of Congress asking them to rename the Ellis Island Immigration Museum as the Bob Hope Memorial Library, reports the Associated Press.
"Bob Hope held a special place in his heart for Ellis Island," read the letter, and the renaming would honor Hope's "great contributions to the American people, the American culture and the American dream." While Hope was alive, in 1990, the Ellis Island Restoration Commission actually recommended the name change, which Hope thought would be one of the "greatest honors of his life," according to the AP.
Now, near the one-year anniversary of his death on July 27th, the proposal has been officially requested of Congress.
Hope's publicist wrote the president of the restoration commission saying Hope "was so proud of his heritage, and his national pride is legendary," and that his family would certainly accept the honor on the late Hope's behalf.
I can't wait for the Michael Moore sewage treatment facility.
Advice taken, but, ironically, it's the headline which draws one into the thread, not the article. I don't blame the poster, but the headline misrepresented the story, and elicited the immediate reaction.
I thought that WAS his AKA.
