Lawmakers Push to Rename Ellis Island
Newsmax ^ | 6/30/04

Posted on 06/30/2004 10:51:42 AM PDT by areafiftyone

Bob Hope immigrated to the U.S. when he was 4 years old, and like millions of other would-be Americans, Ellis Island was the first U.S. soil he stepped on.

Now, Reps. Elton Gallegly, R-Calif., and Elliot Engel, D-N.Y., have written other members of Congress asking them to rename the Ellis Island Immigration Museum as the Bob Hope Memorial Library, reports the Associated Press.

"Bob Hope held a special place in his heart for Ellis Island," read the letter, and the renaming would honor Hope's "great contributions to the American people, the American culture and the American dream." While Hope was alive, in 1990, the Ellis Island Restoration Commission actually recommended the name change, which Hope thought would be one of the "greatest honors of his life," according to the AP.

Now, near the one-year anniversary of his death on July 27th, the proposal has been officially requested of Congress.

Hope's publicist wrote the president of the restoration commission saying Hope "was so proud of his heritage, and his national pride is legendary," and that his family would certainly accept the honor on the late Hope's behalf.

Dumb idea. The name "Ellis Island" is of special historic significance. Leave it alone. Honor Bob Hope some other way.

AS much as I love Bob Hope, Ellis Island name should not be changed! The name and place is part of our heritage!

...on a closer read, it appears that NewsMax is guilty of phrasing their headline in a way which doesn't match the story. If they want to rename the MUSEUM "Bob Hope Memorial Museum," that makes more sense than renaming the island.

It doesn't appear from this article that they actually want to rename the island, but a building located on it.

I've taken the boat trip to Ellis Island when it re-opened and I recommend it to every Freeper to go! But I don't think the Museum name should be changed. I love Bob Hope but my relatives came thru Ellis Island and I like the museum named after the Island which it stands on.

Thanks for the tip-- I think I'll take the family there this fall.

This bit about renaming Ellis Island reminds me of the big blunder they made when they renamed Cape Canaveral as Cape Kennedy. It was such a mistake that Jackie O. finally asked that the name change be undone.

If you listen to the Irish Tenors singing about Ellis Island, you'd never want the name changed.

Burbank-Glendale Airport was renamed Bob Hope Airport - I think Bob would be perfectly content with that.

Bob Hope's contributions had nothing to do with immigration. They had EVERYTHING to do with his service to his country and it's servicemen. Don't we already have a USS Bob Hope (support ship and class)? I think something bigger, more directed towards his selfless service, is in order.

I totally agree with you. If they want, they can put a special plaque on the island to honor Bob. My father, uncles and grandparents also landed on Ellis Island back in 1912. I visited the site several years ago. It was well worth the trip.
