Blood bank needs more donations

Summer is peak time at resorts and off-peak time for blood banks.

The Blood and Tissue of Central Texas needs 300 units of blood to fill the shelves by the end of the week.

"During the summertime there is usually an increased need … but when you have an extended weekend like the July Fourth one coming up, that sort of situation can double and triple on you really quickly. So, that's why we're encouraging people to come in and donate this week so we can be prepared," Nicolette Abernathy, of the Blood and Tissue Center, said.

You can donate blood at the two blood bank locations at 4300 N. Lamar Blvd., in Austin, and at 2132 N. Mays, Suite 900, in Round Rock. On Friday to mobile blood banks will be set up at Office Depot stores at the Lamar and Oltorf location and at U.S. Highway 183 and RR 620.

The types of blood most needed are O and A.

If I had some yet undiscovered bug in my blood AND most importantly deep pockets if the recipient of my blood got sick wouldn't the lawyers line up to impoverish me and enrich themselves?

B+ here, I gave blood last week. I got "lucky" and a TRAINEE took my blood. A chatty, slow TRAINEE. I had been lying on the couch about 10 minutes when a guy got in the couch next to mine. He was done and a woman took his place and was halfway done before the TRAINEE was done with me, and my blood isn't "slow".

"If I had some yet undiscovered bug in my blood...."

No way. If you don't know you have it and the blood center isn't testing for it yet. Now, if knew you had something and/or lied on the screening questions....let's not even go there.

I'll donate blood when somebody starts donating the raw materials for my business, or when doctors donate their time to transfer it to you.

Well, the odds are 2 to 1 that you won't need someone elses donated blood.

I WISH I could, but they won't let me. A few years ago, I was taking ibuprophen for arthritis. My liver enzymes went up. I got a letter saying the Red Cross rejected my blood and now they won't take it.

:( Hey it is good A- blood! Is there any way to get them to change their mind?

How is your liver now, eccentric? Ask your doctor what he would recommend.

My liver is fine. Doc says the enzymes were probably just a reaction to the use of ibuprophen, which I don't use much anymore. (Praise the Lord, the arthritis has faded away.)

I take ibuprofen like it's going out of style...at certain times, if you know what I mean, and they haven't rejected my blood yet. It's the only thing that helps, without being expensive as hell and having side effects, so I HOPE it's not messing up my liver.

...and when ibuprophen isn't enough, wine coolers are a great muscle relaxer...
