There is a pattern here that must be exposed. It goes all the way back the the debates between Bush and Gore, and further.

Remember when Gore kept interrupting Bush, and Bush retorted "I guess the rules don't apply to some people?"

Since then, we've seen:

• The Torricelli rule: you have to allow a competitive race
• The Patsy Mink rule: you have to keep her name on the ballot even though she's dead.
• Democrats refusing to match a power-sharing scheme after they flipped Jeffords, then complaining that "what was good enough for the 106th Congress ought to be good for the 107th Congress" when they lost the Senate in 2002.
• Kerry's outrage at being denied the chance to vote in Congress, while the Democrats are blocking the confirmation votes for all of Bush's judicial appointments
• Kerry's outrage about disrespecting the institutions while his supporters are blocking Ralph Nader from getting on the ballot in Arizona
• Demanding to see Bush's military records while refusing to release Kerry's
• Forcing Ryan's divorce papers to be released while refusing to release Kerry's

Bush should reiterate the line from the debates that the rules only seem to apply to some people, but not others.

Ryan had to cough up his divorce records and now the state election is trashed. Obama is going to win no matter how bad he is for this state. The press is not even touching him. Because it exposes the Left's repeated tactic of using the politics of personal destruction against an opponent and then feigning righteous indignation when the tactic is used back at them. This has happened again and again and again, and whatever it takes to jolt the American people into seeing it for what it is is a good thing.

This is not their private business - when it gets to divorce court it becomes a public record just as is every arrest record, etc !! I could be sealed by court order for compelling reasons, but the Ryan case opened this can of worms and now Kerry will likely have to eat those worms unlesss he can convince (bribe?) a willing "non-partisan" judge.

Nah. In my opinion, court records should never be sealed except for juveniles. They're a legitimate part of the public record.

Any proceeding which requires a court to intervene -- a criminal trial, a civil case, etc -- is essentially being brought before the public, in order to have it adjudicated. Therefore, the public not only needs to know what's happening (knowing what's happening in the court system is a big part of making sure that the courts are working properly -- I consider that a civic duty) but deserves to know. People shouldn't be able to hide their dirty laundry from the public view -- while simultaneously asking the courts for adjudication. My two cents.

In an editorial this paper justified such action by claiming a right of the electorate to know about Ryan the person.
A California Judge agreed and see what shocking news was revealed: the former Mrs. Ryan submitted divorce testimony that both visited sex clubs even as far away as Paris based on Ryan's initiative.
A huge media coverage resulted and Ryan found himself dead in the water.
Following such success by the Tribune to open a Republican's divorce records requests to equally find out about Kerry the person by having Kerry's divorce records opened have fallen on deaf Chicago Tribune ears.
Never mind a self attributed evenhandedness by this paper. When it comes to impartiality party loyalty triumphs every time.
