The future starts here
The Space Review ^ | 6/28/04 | Derek Webber

The boundary between the old and the new is usually a little blurred; there is often a period of overlap coloring the transition. The start of the jet age would be such an example in the aerospace business, with both Spitfires and Meteors flying in the same skies. Nevertheless, there are sometimes identifiable events in history when even an observer at the time can see that a massive change has taken place, and that one era is closing and a new one has begun. Monday June 21st, in Mojave, California was one such turning point. We have entered a new phase of the space flight business, and a new future beckons, due to the efforts of a few inspired entrepreneurs and their small dedicated teams. Before moving on, we should pause to record and celebrate just how major a change has been achieved, courtesy of Messrs Rutan, Allen, Benson and Diamandis.

Please add me to the list. It is about bloody time we got off our cans and back into exploration. It is my personal view that when the universities took over the direction of NASA we got the "robotic exploration while we sit at home and soak up the grants" mentality. It generated a feeling of space only for the academics. Glad to see that phase is coming to a close.

They are called Saganites. Carl Sagan was against Human Space exploration. They don't like what is going on. They think they are the ones who should explore space. Thier domiance is slowly coming to the end.

Sooner or later, the real race to the moon will begin, which I believe is key to a sustained and substantial program. Our country is the Hare in this race, and we may be caught sleeping.

It seems to me that America does not care about exploration no more. We have seem to be fat and lazy.

It seems to me that America does not care about exploration no more. We have seem to be fat and lazy.

To an extent, a large part of the nation has become content with mediocrity - witness people wanting to not grade children on tests/projects or not keep scores in sports activities, because they don't want to hurt anybody's feelings. Trying is all that matters, success doesn't, etc. They even attempt to make villains out of people who succeed above and beyond everybody else's expectations. Standards are lowered, etc.

There are enough of us, however, still around and who have raised our children right, that we will be the nation we once were.

This new space age is one step towards that. For too long we've been settlers, now it's time to be pioneers again.

I agree.. It is time for us to get off our butts and act like true Amercians.. The pioneering type that made our nation great.
