Herzl is founder of the political
form of Zionism, a movement to
establish a Jewish homeland in
Palestine.
PARIS, June 26 (IslamOnline.net) - In a preliminary session, Paris municipality has decided to name a street or a square in the French capital after Theodor Herzl, one of the founders of Zionism, sources told IslamOnline.net Saturday, June 26.
The proposal immediately triggered an outcry from pro-Palestine organizations, saying the measures flies in the face of thousands of Palestinians who fell victim to his Zionist doctrine.
Paris municipality sources told IOL, on condition of anonymity, the decision was taken, in principal, on Friday, June 25.
They said the proposal was put forward by two council members from the ruling Union Pour un Movement Populaire (UMP) party and endorsed by Paris mayor Bertrand Delanoë.
The two members claimed that naming a street or a square after Herzl would be "a nice gesture" as he lived and worked in Paris as a correspondent to an Austrian newspaper.
They alleged in their proposal that Zionism is not a racist but rather a national liberation movement.
Municipality sources said the re-named street or square would likely be inaugurated on July 4, to mark the anniversary of Herzl's death.
Vienna municipality council had earlier this year announced a similar decision to name a street or a square after Herzl, angering its Muslim community and the Arab League.
Counter Campaign
Reacting to the proposal, pro-Palestinian French organizations have encouraged the French people to flood Paris mayor with protest letters and emails to renege on the decision.
"The decision runs in the face of thousands of Palestinian martyrs," Pro-Palestinian French activist Ginette Hass told IOL, dismissing the decision as "scandalous."
She said the Zionist project founded by Herzl and the apartheid regime in South Africa were two faces of the same coin.
Meanwhile, the Citizenship Movement for Palestine society sent a message of protest to the Paris municipality council, a copy of which was obtained by IOL, maintaining that the decision was racially-oriented
The group compared Herzl's platform to the policies of incumbent Israeli Premier Ariel Sharon.
According to Encyclopedia Britannica, Herzl, a Hungarian-born Jew who died in 1904, is founder of the political form of Zionism, a movement to establish a Jewish homeland on territories seized from the Palestinians.
He founded the World Zionist Organization at the first Zionist Congress in Basel, Switzerland, in 1897.
Its aim was to find a "home for the Jewish people in Palestine ".
In 1949, after the foundation of Israel, his remains were exhumed from a Vienna cemetery and reburied in now-occupied west Jerusalem on a hill that now bears his name.
Israels creation has forced the departure of several millions of Palestinians, now mostly living in neighboring countries as refugees after Israel denied them return to homeland.
It also triggered a long-standing conflict between Israel and Arabs, particularly the Palestinians, seeking an end to the Israeli occupation and the establishment of a Palestinian state.
I'm counting the seconds until the French, quivering with fear, reverse themselves.
I'm sure they will.
Chances are, they will.
and wet thier pants, dont forget the pants wetting
MORONS
I never EVER dreamt Paris would someday become a MUSLIM country! Give it a few more years and Paris will be known as KARIZ!
Hey, to pacify the muslims, maybe they can name something after a famous muslim to even things out... A guillotine museum comes to mind...
Mark
I'm sure the Muslims will make a big ruckus and they'll reverse their decision. After all, they are euroweenies. We can't expect too much of them.
Fair and balanced....that's the ticket.
Leni
The Mohammedan termites think they already run France.
But, but, but...Yossi Beilin and Shimon Peres and Ury Avnery and "Peace Now" and all the Israeli Leftists have assuref us that the "Palestinians" only want "EAST" Jerusalem and Gaza and the West Bank for a homeland...
Also, it's not widely mentioned, but Herzl himself was a ferociously secular anti-religionist who wanted to establish the Zionist state in Uganda.
I ask all FReepers to pray for the safety of my son in the IDF, who is on duty in the Jordan Valley.
FRmail me to be added or removed from this Judaic/pro-Israel ping list.

WARNING: This is a high volume ping list
And for all the mothers and fathers who have sons and daughters in Iraq, right now. Seems to me they're more in harms way.
Prayers sent, Alouette.
That the dude
OH MAN Rack him
I didn't know that
I'm surprised the French are honoring one of reborn Israel's central historical forebears. What with the anti-Semitism and pro-Arabism so rampant in France today. Its like a miracle.
"And for all the mothers and fathers who have sons and daughters in Iraq, right now. Seems to me they're more in harms way."
Freeper's have enough prayers for everyone. :-}
