BEIJING (AP) - Chinese authorities executed 17 people on drug charges to mark International Anti-Drugs Day, state news media said Sunday.
The executions were carried out Saturday in Shanghai and Chongqing and came a day after authorities announced 11 other executions scheduled to mark the day. Among those executed Saturday, Lin Shengfu was convicted of smuggling 1.8 kilograms of heroin from Myanmar to Shanghai in 2003, Xinhua News Agency said.
Lin was among 78 drug convicts whose punishments were imposed in Shanghai on Saturday, Xinhua said. It didn't identify any of the others or give details of their cases.
Other cases announced earlier involved heroin, opium and ephedrine - a component of methamphetamine.
China executes hundreds of people every year on drug charges.
Amnesty International appealed to China on Saturday to abandon the use of executions in drug cases.
"No convincing evidence has ever been produced that the death penalty deters would-be traffickers and users more effectively than any other punishment," the human rights group said.
Don't Bogart that joint !
People like you scare me to death.
I feel safer now.
Good way to cut in half the population in America. I'd be among them when "I didn't inhale" in college in the '60s.
Those Chinese know how to party!
Chinese anti-drug commercial:
[melon sits center-screen]
"This is your brain."
[melon explodes as it's hit by several bullets]
"This is your brain on drugs. Any questions?"
Any things with the Name Internationalis, is all about the United Nations
When the Chinese celebrate they pull out all the stops and party down.
Can we include people who don't use turn signals? And that dude who parks using two spaces, he's got to go...
Where's the UN when you need them?
"No convincing evidence has ever been produced that the death penalty deters would-be traffickers and users more effectively than any other punishment," the human rights group said.
Sure cuts down on the repeat offenders though!
How appropriate.
Kinda makes you wonder what they do for Mother's Day...
Good for them.
"According to AP, such executions "are usually done by a gunshot to the head."

Mr. Shengfu gets caught smuggling 1.8 kilos of heroin into my community? Yeah, I'll do the honors.
Hell, if he doesn't care about the misery, addiction, disease, crime, and death he's causing, why should I have any sympathy for him? Smugglers and drug dealers deserve the death penalty.
You'd probably put him in a drug treatment program.

Have public observances of UN holidays? No thanks.
