I couldn't agree with you more. Not meaning to be an armchair general but I strongly feel that had we taken care of Fallujah from the get-go, alot of this crap would not be happening now.
Depends how one defines "work." It doesn't work in that it does not result in gaining the terrorist demands to release fellow terrorists. On the other hand, it does work if the left and others can blame Bush policies for the head sawings instead the head sawers (as has been the case).

One interesting aspect of the War on Terror that--strangely--we never seem to hear about is how complicit all of the news organizations are in the terrorist atrocities. Spectacular terrorism, by its very nature, couldn't exist without the mass media. It is the media that amplifies every attack, broadcasts it around the world, and induces the very reaction in people that the terrorists are seeking.
Terrorism is above all a form of information warfare. It is conducted via the media.

These people are in this for the long haul. They don't measure their victories in days, weeks, or even months. But just look at what has happened so far in 2004: Spain is out of Iraq, "world opinion" (whatever that means) is more against the US than ever, and even here in our own country, the most recent poll on the subject indicates that a majority of Americans think that going into Iraq was a mistake.
I hate to say it, but I think what they're doing is working exceptionally well.

For a while the middle easterners were taking any Roman Citizen they could find and beheading him.
The Romans sent their legions to the middle east. When a Roman was killed they rounded up 1,000 Arabs nearest to where the Roman was killed and beheaded them all.
One Roman = 1000 Arabs. With in a few weeks any Roman citizen could walk unarmed at midnight on a dark night anywhere in the middle east in complete safety. The local citizens would kill any terrorist who even talked about or looked like he might be there to attack a Roman.
It is the same sort of technique still in use in the American Army in the late 1950s. If one member of your platoon screwed up, You punished the entire platoon. Soon you had 43 members of the platoon seeing to it the 44th member did not screw up.
Didn't stop Sadaam at all, and the Iran-Iraq war went happily on
I think the Sunni Wahabbis are scared about what happens to them when the Shiites (who had been oppressed by the Sunni Sadaamites for decades) come to power. There would be no "Muslim street" outrage over a Muslim regime shelling Fallujah into rubble
