ENNIS, Ireland - The US administration confirmed it had axed an interview that US First Lady Laura Bush had been due to grant to Irish public television RTE, only two days after the broadcaster's exclusive interview with the US president himself.
No explanation was given for the schedule change, but journalists travelling with the Bush entourage in Europe noted that the cancellation had come a day after George W. Bush's less-than-sunny showing in his RTE exclusive.
During that interview, given on Thursday in Washington, Bush displayed annoyance and at one point lost his temper when he was contradicted by Irish journalist Carole Coleman.
"Let me finish please. Let me answer your question and then you'll follow up," a visibly annoyed Bush told her.
During that interview, given on same day that a wave of coordinated attacks across Iraq (news - web sites) cost at least 90 lives, Bush insisted his actions were improving the state of the world.
"I do believe the world is a safer place and becoming a safer place," he told RTE.
Asked about the mounting death toll in Iraq, Bush commented: "Nobody cares more about the deaths than I do".
After a summit with European Union (news - web sites) leaders in Ireland on Saturday, Bush flew to Turkey, where he will attend a NATO (news - web sites) summit in Istanbul.
Anybody classing the Irish as rude elitist Europeans, has never been to Ireland.
Your suggested alternative response for President Bush was excellent. His inability to riposte is hurting him greatly among those who do not believe in his policies and sincerity. Since most of us do we can overlook that shortcoming because it is irrelevant to his resoluteness and character.

He certainly DOES have the ability to riposte, which his advisors are constantly reminding him to tone down, so as not to "offend" people. He is at his best when allowed to be his despised, cowboy-type self. My quibble with him is that he listens to his advisors' banal reminders not to be himself.

You are right , I have never been to Ireland, I have to Judge them by what I see , and I see Rudeness and Elitism and a nasty broad with an axe to grind, I would protect my wife from this type of behavior too. If they like Bill Clinton thats fine , they can have my share of him.
The Irish interviewer was rude and disrespectful. I would bet my bottom dollar MRS. Bush was not happy about how they treated her husband, and she, therefore, did not want to do the interview.
'Fraid I have to disagree with you here. I returned from Ireland yesterday (see my FR name for a clue!) and I can confirm that not only are the Irish rude and European, they are utterly hate-filled, vicious, frothing-at-the-mouth ugly and irrational when it comes to George W.
I honestly feared for Bush's life in Ireland and prayed earnestly for his safety (thank you, God). The reporter (Coleman)probably approached the Bush interview like every other media moron over there on this subject - BASH BUSH and increase your popularity and job security in Ireland.
Thanks for the opportunity to rant. I'm wholly ashamed of my countrymen and women. I fear the Island of Saints and Scholars has been hijacked by materialism and has lost (or at least mislaid) it's soul.

And I thank God for it. You could not pay me enough to go to Ireland.
I met a large number of recent Irish immigrants in Chicago a couple of years ago in a convention setting, they spoke very poorly and sarcasticly about this country.
Then I read about their belligerent attitude towards our President, and I can only agree with the adage that all the strong and smart Irishmen got out of Ireland 100 years ago.
Since when do they give the whole story? That might defeat their purposes.
