Some of Iraq's most influential Shiite leaders have condemned the Al Qaeda-linked terrorists operating in the country.
At a Friday prayer meeting in Karbala, a spokesman for Grand Ayatollah Ali al Sistani told worshipers that Al Qaeda's top leaders are "filthy infidels".
He names Osama bin Laden and the Jordanian-born terrorist purportedly operating in Iraq, Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi.
He says they are "bastards" who "nurture malignance" against Shiite Muslims.
A prominent Shiite leader was assassinated in Iraq on Thursday night.
Al Qaeda's leadership is made up of Sunni Muslims from the Wahabi sect.
I guess once it get a little too close to home these "clerics" all of a sudden get some guts to speak out.
You can bet your last dollar half of them once the danger is removed will go back to bashing Western infidels at every chance.
FINALLY someone protests Al-Qaida. Not to make light of this, but I swear this is the first time I ever heard anyone curse out these mutts other than Repubs. Says alot doesn`t it? Anyway we can trade this guy for Algore? How about the whole `Rat party?
I hope it works, I am ready to see Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi dead.
Isreal knocked three more biggies today. Their method of killing the leadership is working very well.
AQ has worked as times with Shiites, but the relationship has always been strained.
In Iraq, AQ, Syria and the Sunni Baathist remenants have worked closely together.
Iran has sponsored the likes of Sadr.
They both fought us because we are the strongest power in Iraq, but if we were to run, they would soon start fighting each other.
I think Sistani realizes that such isn't in his interest in the least, and that is why he has been somewhat helpful. In a democrat Iraq he will be a major power broker after all.
BTW, no one wishes to mention it in the press...but how many of AQ's foot soldiers are Palis? Do we know any other group so willingly to commit suicide attacks?
Iran has been trying to gain control of Iraq for years, just as Iraq has been trying to gain control of Iran. They both sent operatives into the other's country to subvert the populace.
While the Shi'ite mad mullahs of Iran are just as bad, some Shia clerics not in league with them prefer freedon from oppression and are therefore not supported by the Iranian regime. Sadre is an example of an operative supported by the Iranian regime. Sistani is an example of one who is not.
Many Shi'ite Iraqis are wary of Iranian influence, while some are in league. As more Shi'ite Iranian "pilgrems" head into Iraq to visit the freed, open holy cities, more Iraqis may be subverted... or may wind up being the ones doing the subversion and strengthening the budding revolution in Iran. Only time will tell.
Ping!
No, Sistani and a few other clerics have denounced al Qaeda before. The media generally ignores them. They have to give some publicity to Sistani because he's extrely powerful and has a huge following in Iraq.
it is getting heavy there. This was not done without some motive.
Good development. But note how many dead and maimed people it takse to get these assclown clerics to condemn Al Kaida terrorists.
I don't know how many of you have heard of something the Salafist Islamic terrorists in Algeria invented. Pleasure marriages.
Basically "pleasure marriages" during the Algeria Islamist insurgency consisted of terrorists informing a young woman that either she submitted to a temporary "pleasure marriage" with their fighters (i.e. gang rape) or she and her family would be massacred. Popular support for the islamists took a stunning nosedive and the government is now rounding them up pretty handily.
What happens in Fallujah or any of the areas controlled by Islamists when Sunni jihadis start demanding "pleasure marriages" with Shiite women ?
At a Friday prayer meeting in Karbala, a spokesman for Grand Ayatollah Ali al Sistani told worshipers that Al Qaeda's top leaders are "filthy infidels". He names Osama bin Laden and the Jordanian-born terrorist purportedly operating in Iraq, Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi.Remarkably, he blames the terrorists for the terror, instead of blaming the United States, Israel, or Europe. I'm astounded! I guess he never worked as a western journalist.
George W. Bush will be reelected by a margin of at least ten per cent
This seems obvious to me also. I can't figure out why no one will say it officially.
bump
If he accepts that this bandit Zarqawi actually exists, that's an improvement. Based on other accounts you read, these clerics come off as outspoken village idiots, tinfoil hats and all. Why anyone would remain faithful muslim after listening to the same ignorant rant every week is beyond me.
