Senate candidates to debate Sunday

Collins, Cain will attend; Isakson declines invitation

BY RICHARD HYATT

Staff Writer

Three Republicans want to go to Washington as Georgia's new U.S. senator but only two of them want to come to Columbus for a televised debate.

Rep. Mac Collins and businessman Herman Cain have accepted invitations for a Sunday night debate at the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. Rep. Johnny Isakson has declined.

This won't be the first debate held without the presence of the GOP frontrunner. To date, he has passed on five different debates, most of them outside of the Atlanta area. On Sunday, according to his Web site, he plans to attend two patriotic concerts at a Fulton County church.

"He has a commitment at Roswell Methodist Church that he has done for years," said Marie Hodge, speaking for the Isakson campaign.

The local debate begins at 7 p.m. in Legacy Hall. It is sponsored by the Muscogee Republican Party and the Columbus State College Republicans. It will be broadcast live by WTVM Channel 9 in Columbus and fed to a station in Albany.

Each candidate has been given 100 tickets. General admission tickets will be available at the box office on the day of the debate. Tickets are $3.

Rob Doll, chairman of the Muscogee Republican Party, said organizers offered Isakson a number of dates but nothing could be worked out. "They first told us he would be here then said he wouldn't," Doll said Tuesday.

Twenty-two hours after the debate, Isakson will be here as part of his "Stop the Pork" tour. Throughout the week, he will be visiting barbecue restaurants across Georgia speaking against political pork. His stop here will be 5 p.m. Monday at Country's Barbecue 6298 Veterans Parkway.

In a June 10th letter to Doll, Isakson's campaign manager said though the candidate couldn't be in Columbus for the debate, he was committed to a discussion of the issues. Campaign Manager Chris Carr said that during the past six months Isakson has debated his opponents in Atlanta, Duluth, Dublin and Rockmart.

"We also have a frequent schedule of debates and forums for the remainder of the campaign, averaging more than one such event per week," Carr wrote.

Matt Wiley, Cain's campaign director, said Isakson has missed more debates than he has made.

"He is picking and choosing," Wiley claimed. "The bottom line is he doesn't want to debate."

The Big Chicken clucks again!!! Johnny Isakson has avoided so many debates in this race that he is becoming better known as Georgia's second Big Chicken.

Question..have Collins and Isakson given up their House seats, or will they run for them if they lose the primary?

Any candidate who refuses to debate the issues in a primary is a huge sign that he/she is going to be a weak canddiate in the general election.

Both Isakson and Collins are out of the House, regardless of the outcome. They couldnt qualify for both races.

Isakson is giving up his seat in Congress, he is NOT running for his Congressional seat, he's OUT!

There are several good candidates, whoever gets the nomination will win the general election, it is a LOCK for Republican's (this is still Newt Country, his former seat, my home district).

Don't know about Collins, he is from the Macon area.

Friends, It is impossible in Georgia to run for the US Senate and the US House of Representatives in the same year. Collins and Isakson were both out of the Congress (for the time being at least) the day they qualified to run for Senate.

Mac gave up his seat knowing that a strong conservative would win it, so he knew a conservative voice would remain. All 3 of the candidates for his seat are pro-life, endorsed by Georgia Right to Life. I know that Mac would never have left the House if this hadn't been the case, and also that he knew the Senate needs a strong, experienced conservative from Georgia to bring about changes in our laws to protect the unborn, uphold the bedrock institution of marriage, and to limit government and lower taxes. His 12+ year record is indisputable evidence of his commitment to conservative ideals.

By the way, I wish we could see a REAL debate - they seem to all look the same during these debates!
