Good for Home Depot! What bothers me is that the military is in need of donations.

That's because politicians from both parties use military procurement as a means to buy votes. It's a problem that goes back before WWII. And the military doesn't lack for money either. It's up to almost half a trillion dollars per year.

True story:

This past week I went to our closest Home Depot in Cincy looking for slate tile for reflooring our master bath. A lady walks up to me and says, "You thinking of doing this yourself?" I say, "Yep...I'm gonna try it." She says, "I teach classes on just this every other week."

We talk a bit and she gives me the next class date. I say, "I'm coming to one of your classes, but my son's in Iraq, his wife is expecting, and they're letting him come visit her, so I won't be able to make that next class."

She says, "You just come in when you can. I give you a personal class because of your son."

Then she says, "Remember to pray for Matt Maupin."

This Home Depot is right near Batavia....Matt's home.

Normally I avoid Home Depot because of their non-service and self-checkout system.

The Home Depot near me has great service. Plenty of people on the floor and always helpful. The local Lowes is a different matter. Have never had anyone at Lowes ask if I needed help and had to go looking for someone the one time I needed to buy something there.

If the local HD has a self checkout I haven't seen it.

Home Depot panders to criminal illegal aliens, just as the government does. They will get none of my business.

Home Depot Donates Tools, Supplies to Iraq Rebuilding Effort

American Forces Press Service

http://www.dod.mil/news/Jun2004/n06252004_2004062506.html

WASHINGTON, June 25, 2004 – A company the Defense Department has cited for supporting its National Guard and Reserve employees has donated $1 million in tools and supplies to the Iraq rebuilding effort.

Home Depot is one of 15 companies to receive the 2004 DoD Employer Support Freedom Award. Earlier, the company donated $1 million and a million employee volunteer hours to help the families of deployed service members with home repairs and maintenance.

"This donation is part of The Home Depot's long-standing commitment to the U.S. troops currently serving in Iraq," said Bob Nardelli, Home Depot's chairman, president and chief executive officer. "With more than 1,800 associates serving in the current military efforts, we have a special interest in making sure all of the U.S. troops know that we appreciate and support them."

The Army and Marines are transporting the goods to Iraq from San Diego. Officials said accepting and transporting the donated materials was accomplished in full compliance with laws and regulations.

Company officials said nearly 100,000 tools and materials, including shovels, table saws, concrete mixers, safety scaffolding, power generators, light bulbs, jackhammers, and thousands of letters from Home Depot employees left San Diego June 24 on nine tractor-trailers.

Among the reasons DoD recognized Home Depot's support of its Guard and Reserve employees, officials said, is that the company equalized and extended the pay and benefits of employees called to active duty.

Home Depot is great. Too bad so much of their hardware is made in China.

What sort of hardware? My choices for a chainsaw were U.S. or Mexico, and all its extension-ladders were made in the U.S.
