UN Rights Envoys Seek Access to Prisoners of U.S.

GENEVA (Reuters) - United Nations human rights investigators on Friday called for access to prisoners held by U.S. forces in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay to check that international standards are upheld. In a rare joint statement, they said that key U.N. special rapporteurs on torture, the independence of judges and lawyers, the right to physical and mental health as well as independent U.N. experts on arbitrary detention should undertake a joint mission as soon as possible.

The appeal was issued after U.N. rights investigators held closed-door talks in Geneva on Wednesday on the effects of counter-terrorism measures on human rights worldwide.

It follows an international outcry over mistreatment of Iraqi detainees in U.S. custody at Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad, sparked by photographs depicting U.S. soldiers hooding prisoners and using dogs to intimidate them.

President Bush said this week that the U.S. government had never ordered and would never order detainees to be tortured.

The investigators would seek to "ascertain, each within the confines of their mandate, that international human rights standards are properly upheld with regard to these (detained) persons," according to the statement.

It did not say whether U.S. authorities had already been contacted about the proposed visits.

Funny how the UN doesn't give a s--t about American prisoners or hostages, but s--ts bricks over those in our custody.

The hypocrisy of that organization just boggles the mind.

If you were a member of an organization that so clearly loathed you, would you stay a member?

The same UN that aided and abetted Saddamn's brutality while it helped him steal from the Iraqis? The same UN that's busily obstructing a number of investigations? That UN's concerned with human rights? Un huh.

Dear UN Rights Committee,

Please take note that the prisoners with you you seek access ARE US Prisoners of War. Perhaps, with your busy schedules and all, you have forgotten that the US tried to get you to participate in liberating Iraq from its former dictator, Saddam Hussein, but you repeatedly declined our polite invitation.

Following your decline of our invitation to liberate Iraq, the US, following through on the substance of nearly 20 UN resolutions giving ANY UN member-nation the authority to do so, undertook to support and uphold the very resolutions that the UN failed to support and uphold on its own.

As a result, the Prisoners of War to whom you are seeking access are US Prisoners of War and, as such, you have no right whatsoever to access them except at the pleasure and distinct permission of the United States of America and/or its official representatives.

So, go suck eggs, you leftist twits!

And get yourselves and your wretched leftist country club out of my country and off of my land.

erm... they ARENT prisoners of war, cause if they are then the UN has a point and the treatment of them is illegal. maybe you should research a bit about what these terms mean.

POWs or not, the UN still has no right of access to them. Only the Int'l Red Cross has the right to access POWs.

But, you are correct that most aren't POWs, they are "detainees".

So, jihadists protect themselves in U.N. emergency vehicles

All the while the U.N. persists to berate and accuse the U.S. for wartime atrocities.

...self-righteous terrorist relief organization

Make them go AWAY…
