WASHINGTON, June 23 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The House of Representatives today overwhelmingly passed H.R. 218, legislation that would allow qualified off-duty and retired law enforcement officers to carry their firearms concealed in all 50 states.
Originally drafted by Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham and Law Enforcement Alliance of America (LEAA) Executive Director Jim Fotis in 1992, the 'National Concealed Carry for Cops' legislation has been a 12-year fight that has been embraced by nearly every association representing rank and file police officers and a significant bipartisan majority in the House and Senate.
At a press conference marking passage of the life-saving legislation in the House, Fotis remarked, "After more than a decade of fighting, a major victory has been won for America's men and women in blue. For 12 years the Law Enforcement Alliance of America has backed Congressman Cunningham in his efforts and helped lead the fight to pass H.R 218. In that time Duke has proven himself, time and time again, to be a good friend and the greatest ally a good cause -- and cops -- could ever have. We owe a debt of gratitude to Law Enforcement's 'Top Gun' on Capitol Hill. Thank you Congressman Cunningham."
LEAA's Fotis and Rep. Cunningham were joined by Rep. Ric Keller (R-Fla.) and Rep. Tom Feeney (R-Fla.) as well as law enforcement leaders Bill Johnson from the National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO), Don Baldwin from the National Law Enforcement Council (NLEC), Brad Card from the National Troopers Coalition (NTC) and other law enforcement leaders as well as officers from area departments.
H.R. 218 now awaits a vote by the Senate. President Bush has indicated his strong support and his willingness to promptly sign 'National Concealed Carry for Cops' into law.

from the chiefs and sheriffs, but the cops who work for a living, around here anyway, support carry.
What's wrong with you, the X wife get the doublewide?
Anything that makes it harder for a citizen carrying to be legal, the cop bosses love. Even though an Officer Friendly grunt here and there would personally sooner see rapes and murders prevented by citizen self defense than cleaned up by calling the cops after the tragedy.
What is this catty talk about, short stuff?
I mean unless there is a path for John Q. Citizen to get on this new-militia roll, as someone else put it the House of Lords had better put a spear thru its heart.
They want to rise into ranks of elites. (Upward mobility.)
Those are good points. Thanks.
What it is a foot in the door for is the Scary Weapons Ban renewal. Feinstein will try to attach the AWB to this to get the last increment of support that she needs. Call and write your Senators to vote NO.
It would be a glimmer if someone tagged an amendment onto this even to "study the issue." Which study then retreats into a glurky dark basement for years while Bradyites and cop bosses scream and mesmerize the public. And then poof, we get a Libertarian president and all becomes well.
But maybe, maybe, that'll dampen down the House enough.
Thanks. I really was trying to drag something out of this discussion more than "hell yes" or "hell no" and you've pointed out a good argument to kill this where it stands.
A statement of why on earth this is supposed to be within the constitutional powers of Congress would be nice.
And all the activist judges and justices retire overnight to Costa Rica...
If this passes into law but even one state objects (Illinois???) the skirmish will be quite intriguing.
Good point. Or any alteration of the Second Amendment for that matter. I guess 'equal protection under the law' doesn't apply when it's your life you want to protect.
That is OCCUPATIONAL Fatalities which I take to mean 'on the job'. This bill has nothing to do with 'on the job' carry since they already do that. Show me a statistic that saids off duty cops are more in need of firearms than the rest of us.
Can'tcha see irony. It's shocking, but even an electrician is more likely to get buzzed off of this mortal coil.

I had to stumble through Thomas.loc.gov to find the above info. My is that when it's passed by voice vote, then you don't get the yeas and neas by name.
I don't know where you live, but I live in NYC. I have quite a few friends on the NYPD. My best friend is an armed investigator for the state's Dept. of Environmental Conservation. To a man, they are leery of Second Amendment rights. I suspect that's the situation in any city big enough to have a major league sports team. We're so sophisticated(read that chicken sh*t) don't cha know.
