Moon To Mars: What's Beyond?

On January 14, 2004, President George W. Bush announced a new vision for America's civil space program that calls for human and robotic missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond:

"Today, humanity has the potential to seek answers to the most fundamental questions posed about the existence of life beyond Earth. Telescopes have found planets around other stars. Robotic probes have identified potential resources on the Moon, and evidence of water - a key ingredient for life - has been found on Mars and the moons of Jupiter."

There is more to space than the Moon and Mars.

This could be big, really BIG.

There is more to the solar system than earth, moon, Mars. We will probably find the many moons of Jupiter and Saturn, and of course the asteroids and comets if we can catch them economically, and other objects way out where it is cold and dark all the time ultimately have several times the value of planet earth for whatever purpose.

A stepping stone to the expansion of the human race into the solar system, and, eventually, the stars.

That's what's up there.

The future of Man, God willing. I hope, by some miracle, I live to see some of it.

"...out to the Moon, and then nearby,
where scattered riches loosely lie."

Quoting myself, of course.

Me I prefer leaving the solar system, however, I would settle for Mars.

The "...and beyond" covers everything.

Yes. And if you want to get there, you use the Moon to bootstrap your way off planet. That will make the Beyond possible.

One step at a time...

Like I said, I hope I live long enough to see SOME of it.

For Sci-Fi buffs, the late 20th-early 21st century have been disappointing so far.

Where are the bases on the moon, the expeditions to Mars, the asteroids, and beyond? Where are the satellite way stations, the 'orbital bus terminals,' if you will?

For crying out loud, I'd settle for a beanstalk!

= )

I will not repeat yet again the economic reasons why none of Bush's ideas will happen. Doing so is tiresome, as in teaching a pig to sing.
