I'm sad the people of Brazil have to go thru this. But it is tempered by the fact that they elected this nutcase. And by the fact that, assuming he permits elections to throw him out--always a question with socialists, the folks there may have learned their lesson.
The fall of Lula's government will be strategically good because a spanish speaking axis of Cuba, Venezuela and Brazil has been developing and that could be a serious long-term problem--especially with the noises Brazil makes about missle and nuclear technology and with Venezuela's apparent sympathy toward terrorist types.
If this is all, its not that bad. So far, they still have elections. Consider the situation in Venezuela with Chavez. Do you think he'll let himself be voted out of office? My take... No way.

In defense of Lula his economic policy has been mainstream. There were fears he was going to open the spighot but he has so far kept things under control. The critics are the Socialists/Communists who want populist policies that have served Latin America so "well" in the past.
When he took office, Lula publicly stated that he wanted Brazil to develop nuclear weapons.
Somewhere in the middle of our "To Do List" is "Whack Lula," right behind "Whack Hugo Chavez and get that stupid parrot blamed for it."

The operative term is 'so far.' I have huge faith in the ability of socialists to come up with reasons not to have elections. As to Chavez, I agree. It will take force to make him lose his death grip on Venezuela. He's worse than Ortega, who at least pretended he had an interest in democracy, which was of course, his undoing.
