ARLINGTON, VAGov. Bill Owens issued the following statement.
"Colorado's economy has created 9,300 more jobs over the last year, causing unemployment to drop to 4.9 percent. Helped by the President's historic tax relief, Colorado's economy is strong and growing stronger. Despite all this encouraging economic news, John Kerry is talking about the Great Depression and making our state a stop on his pessimism and misery tour.
"When the President signed the Healthy Forests legislation into law, Senator Kerry said that it would take 'a chainsaw to our public forests.' The Massachusetts Senator now says that he likes 'a lot of parts' of the Healthy Forests Initiative and that he is for 'a vibrant, strong' logging industry. Kerry's shifting position on the Healthy Forests Initiative, which would protect states like Colorado from devastating wildfires, is just another example of his tendency to contradict himself for political gain."
The more I read about Governor Owens, the more I like him. I hope he becomes a national figure in the GOP, hopefully Hillary doesn't have his FBI file or if she does that he's squeaky clean.

Bump
He has been my pick for '08 since I first heard of him.
Not gonna happen. I used to be a big fan of the Guv. But recently, he separated from his wife of many years, leaving her with two teenage sons to raise on her own. He has been seen at very public events with a sweet young thang on his arm while still asks Frances (his wife) to make appearances as first lady. Even worse, other, much more serious, and somewhat credible rumors about moral issues are repeated authoritatively by folks reasonable high in the party here in Colorado.
Then he mishandled the US Senate situation here badly when Ben Nighthorse Campbell retired. First, Owens endorsed Bob Schaffer and then yielded to White House pressure and conducted a very public search for anyone but Schaffer (Schaffer is a real conservative who doesn't drink white house cool aid on Bush's stupider domestic policy lurches to the left).
His inability to handle this situation well left the party greatly weakened in a crucial Senate race. The upshot, Owens got a very, very cool reception at the recent Repub State Assembly.
He used to have the Golden touch. But he can't seem to get anything right these days. And squeaky clean he ain't.
I've got to agree with Tailback on this one. Owens has done some really loopy things for a conservative. His "personal problems" aka "lover" have been common gossip for years around here. It's hard to see how he can make it in the public spotlight.
Oh, wait a minute - now it's okay for presidents to commit adultery. What was I thinking?
On the other hand, he's totally right about Kerry being an idiot when it comes to forest management. I'd rather log it than randomly burn it.
I didn't criticize Owens, that was ModelBreaker. He did bring up some legitimate issues if true. Don't forget how the left trashed Gingrich, this sounds similar. It's too bad, Owens was a favorite of mine.
I continually see these comments on FR, and frankly, I'm baffled. What is there about Owens that people hundreds or thousands of miles away pick up that those of us in the same state miss when we get up close?
Regarding Gov Bill? I stand by my observations that he has blown what was a very very promising shot at president in 2008, damaged the party here in Colorado quite a bit, and damaged the national party by making whatever Senate candidate comes out on top in the primaries significantly weaker. And, I stand by my statement that I, and a lot of the other party memebers here in Colorado are very disappointed that he has blown it. If that's degrading, so be it.
Make your choices or improvements public. Everybody can do tear downs. This is the easy part.
OK. Do something really, really hard. You say something good about Guv Bill. That will make the forum fair and balanced :)
Forest fires are worth to stick your neck out.
Can't even respond sentence to this, even if sentence were it. If I may respond to what I think you meant, rather than what you wrote, I generally prefer to keep my entire body out of forest fires, especially my head. Or maybe you meant that you should stick you head out of forest fires if you find yourself caught in one. If so, I agree to an extent. But I think, as a general rule, it would be better to get yourself entirely out of the fire. Don't you?
Even Kerry had to go from flip to flop after he saw what took place. At first he, just like you, thought he's getting away with tearing down, but even he realized it's better to join instead of being left out in the cold.
Join what? Your bandwagon?
Modelbreaker state your preferences, if you have any.
Well, let's see. I prefer my wife. I prefer Schaffer for Senate. I prefer AMD chips to Intel chips. Does that cover it? Oh, yeah, and I prefer a governor that can be faithful to his wife and not damage his party's likely candidate for Senate. I could go on but you get the drift.
Owens is a limp-wristed RINO, and the only reason why CO is not in a budget crisis like everyone else is that we put the gov't in a strait jacket years ago called the Tabor amendment. I'd like to see that happen out here in CA as well.
