Bruce is the Arch-Druid of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space, aka GnawAn'Pis. He hits all the right notes for his luddite eco-wacky audience: "space pollution", militarization, corporate profits.

Well, the last name "Gagnon" is certainly fitting.

Wild-eyed hysterical blather. I don't know how I'm ever gonna clear his spittle off the inside of my screen....

Neal Boortz hit the nail on the head with his writing today. He said:

"PRIVATE SPACE FLIGHT

Three years from inception to accomplishment. Thirty million dollars. A private astronaut in sub-orbital space. Do any of you think that the government could have pulled this one off? Do you folks realize what was accomplished yesterday? I'll guarantee that if someone went to NASA and told them to develop a completely new from top to bottom vehicle to send three men into sub-orbital space and return to a landing strip, and to do the whole project for under thirty million .. they couldn't do it.

So ... let me tell you what's next. Before the month is out my guess is that someone is going to propose that private individuals be prohibited from traveling into space. Someone will step forward to close off space exploration to all but government.

Just wait."

Bruce needs to read up on the history of North America from the 1600s-1800s. Then he'll see how it works.

Cripes, what a bunch of kookery. It reads just like Larry Niven's "Fallen Angels", doesn't it?

Heaven forbid someone mine a sterile, unpopulated, remote piece of rock and, horror of horrors, make some money!

It was recently reported that the Haliburton Corporation is now working with NASA to develop new drilling capabilities to mine Mars.

How did I know that Halliburton was going to get mentioned in this screed?

Once privateers have a foothold in space, how the hell are merely Terrestrial governments gonna stop them? How are they going to enforce their edicts? Send up the Space Shuttle to shoot you down? Send cops to your address on Mars? Maybe have one of the Rovers scratch nasty names in the side of your habitat with its RAT?

Private exploration of space is governments worst nightmare come true. A complete loss of CONTROL over what happens in areas where their power does not, and cannot, reach.

Wagons up. Spaceward Ho!

The news brings us the story of "space pioneers" launching privately funded craft into the heavens. A special prize is offered to the first private aerospace corporation whoWHICH can successfully takePUT a pilot and a "space tourist" into orbit.

typical leftists... no concept of grammar

Drilling for oil on Mars? His ignorance is stunning, yet it provides insight into the deep dark recesses of the eco-wacko mindset. He wants the UN to control all access to space. That might not be so bad, you just grease the palms of the right officials and you'll have carte' blanche to do whatever you want. If goofy UN treaties ever become an impediment to serious business in space, then we will simply back out of those treaties. We haven't had any serious business in space except telecommunications so far, but that's changing fast. Goofy eco-wackos don't determine business policies, people with a powerful lobby and money determine what course we take. Goofy, unfocused eco-wackos won't be a factor in it. But I'm sure they'll complain with their generic "capitalism bad" critique every kilometer.

"It was recently reported that the Haliburton Corporation is now working with NASA to develop new drilling capabilities to mine Mars." I was involved in that secret meeting between Halliburton and NASA. We concluded that we could mine, but never could come up with a flexible railway from Mars to the Earth.

Yes, Bruce, let's send in the communist and fascist collectivists to assure social equity and biodiversity conservation for the moon bats. And if anyone disagrees, we can open up concentration camps and gulags on the dark side of the moon.

RE: "When the United Nations concluded the 1979 Moon Treaty the U.S. refused, and still does, to sign it. One key reason is that the treaty outlaws military bases on it but also outlaws any nation, corporation, or individual from making land "claims" on the planetary body. The 1967 U.N. Outer Space Treaty takes similar position in regard to all of the planetary bodies. The U.N., realizing we needed to preempt potential conflict over "ownership" of the planetary bodies, made claim that the heavens were the province of all humankind." And herein lies the crux of this entire piece of agitprop. It is incumbant upon the enemies of the USA and Western Civilization to get the US to sign this treaty. For if the US signs it, we'll abide by it, and will be unarmed in space and will have no bases there. Whereas, our enemies will cheat and will secretly create an arsenal in orbit and on the moon, which will be used against us for conquest. If you see an environmental extremist, you are essentially seeing a watermelon, green on the outside and red on the inside.

Privatization also means that existing international space legal structures will be destroyed in order to bend the law toward private profit.

Just like private shipping has destroyed the law of the sea. This guy's a socialist who's afraid that government might no longer control access to space and the unwashed masses might actually escape this world.

Personally, I'd like to see a "space voucher" plan. We all know that the NASA thing is a bloated bureaucracy that can't take individuals up into space for years, if ever.

Instead of my taxes going to NASA, I want my share is space vouchers.
