'Um missie....you need to curb those braids and pull out that weave...."
Lots of white high school girls are getting those long hair extensions a la Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie....soon may cause havoc in the classroom according to these bozos!
In some cultures people commonly go around nearly naked. If those students enrolled at St Edmonds, I suppose all clothing would be waived for cultural reasons. They can't have foreigners inconvenienced by English social customs, apparently. Perhaps this girl should reapply as a Caribbean or African student.
Man, the anorexia look was in big time back then....
I agree that schools should be allowed to set their own dress codes. In fact, I think all schools--public and private--should have higher standards for dress and appearance. But the rules MUST be applied uniformly. The problem here is not that the school banned corn-row braids, it's that they granted a waiver to some students and not to all.
P.S. Imagine the outcry if the races had been reversed in this case.
"...she was told they were allowed to wear them for cultural reasons."
What if my culture gave special importance to robbing people or cheating them? I'd get exemptions for that, cheat off everyone's exams, and take their $$ while I was at it.
There are two questions here, which should not be confused:
First, can the school legally or properly do this? Because they are a private institution, the answer is yes. The school has the right to do whatever it wishes, provided no laws are broken or contractual obligations with the parents are violated.
Second, is it right, and ancillary to this question, can the school be criticized for its decision? To my mind, no, it is not right because it is blatant racial discrimination. And the school is most certainly not immune to criticism for its actions.
The parents are well within their rights to condemn the school and attempt to force change in this ill-conceived policy.

Bo gettting older.
"When on earth did hair styles become the exclusive use of some groups?"
I don't suppose there will be any objection, then, if the white boys all show up with shaved heads?
Political correctness run amok. Of course, ALL political correctness is jacked up.
Next they will tell us our kids cant speak jingo inner city talk and become unprepared for the future..Because its our responsibility to get the jobs and pay taxes to support THEIR "culture". A stretch?? I dont know.
Sounds like Principal Trunchbull in Matilda.
For what purpose are braids banned? Even the white girl french braid types? Never heard of braids being banned in school before.
I shall studiously refrain from commenting on the 'toe.
She started out as a 4 in the first place. Look at that pic--yuck.
That would be African/Brit, this story is from England. Besides it was Afro-Carribean, mon.
They should paint their faces black and then go back to school -- problem solved.
Well, now that YOU brought it up...
It almost looks like a photoshop joke. I see toes and a landing strip.
A white girl named Jade? Really?
Sounds like Jade was trying to integrate culturally, but it wasn't accepted.
