UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Secretary-General Kofi Annan (news - web sites) and key U.N. Security Council members intensified their opposition to a U.S. draft resolution that would renew the exemption of American soldiers from international prosecution.
Consequently, the Bush administration on Friday still lacked the required nine votes to renew the measure that would give U.S. troops immunity from the new International Criminal Court. The previous resolution expires on June 30.

This has been in the news for the last 2 days and I was hoping it'd get posted. If Bush caves in to this he can kiss his election goodbye.
I am praying that the President issue a prime-time speech about getting the U.S. out of the U.N. He could just issue an executive order ceasing all participation immediately, then give the U.N. 30 days to leave American soil so Bloomberg can use the valuable property.
Ain't gonna happen. Congress will give whatever money the U.N. needs in exchange for another one-year exemption from prosecuting U.S. soldiers. Congress just gave the U.N. $1 billion to renovate their building.
Short of an armed uprising, we're stuck with the U.N.

Who will enfoce any charges brought? The USA is the only teeth the UN posesses. Are we to enforce sanctions on ourself. LMAO
While we are there under the UN admistration our troops are supervised by the same administration that can charge them and their superiors with war crimes.
Charging and enforcing are totally different animals. Who is going to do it? The UN without the USA lol?
Let them try to arrest a US Marine...while he is in full combat dress. You think his buddies will stand around and just watch?
That's a funny scenario. No one has ever stood face to face to fight the Marines, even defending their homeland. Now we are to believe they might come and arrest one for war crimes. Give me a break
Calm down. This blustering by the UN carries no weight at all. We're the "enforcement" arm of the UN. No one is going to try our soldiers in an international court.Even if they do in absentia, let them try to enforce it
Fine by us. No immunity, no peacekeeping missions.
Get us OUT of the UN NOW! No way will we allow foreign, unelected authorities power over us. No way.
Uh, we're not there under the UN. The UN will have nothing to do in Iraq except set up the elections. As of 6/30 Iraq is a soverign nation and I imagine we will have a bi-lateral agreement with the Iraqi government giving us immunity. We will only go into countries who have signed a bi-lateral agreement.
This means no more logistical support for UN missions, no more sending peacekeepers. I expect a pull-out in Kosovo within days after this thing is passed. Anyone know of any other UN missions we are on? Haiti? I don't think that one is a problem since we're leaving anyway as the peacekeeping troops arrive from other countries.

LOL, I just thought of the perfect response. If they pass this thing withdrawing immunity, then we ought to announce immediately that we are withdrawing immunity for all UN diplomates in New York.
That speech still gives me goosebumps.
We've already said that if we don't get immunity, we will pull out of ALL peacekeeping operations. That will be the end of the U.N.'s 'military'. If they won't give us immunity from their silly little court, they'll be cutting their own throats.
We will never get out of the UN, in my opinion, no matter how much it costs us U.S taxpayers. The Federal government needs something to bribe other nations with to get them to follow what we want. Sort of like a welfare system for other countries: we get them dependent on OUR money and our government can then influence them.

I'm not so much worried about individual soldiers or local commanders. No outside party is going to step into a warzone to try to arrest a Marine, and most soldiers are too anonymous to be picked up by police when they're not in uniform.
My real fear is that some of our (or Israel's) generals or ex-political figures will have "outstanding warrants" in ICC-member countries. For example, can't you just see some snotnose arresting Kissinger while he's on business in Europe?
