The US ambassador to Britain has announced he is to stand down after less than three years in the post. William Farish says he wants to pursue business interests and spend more time with his family.
In an article in the Times newspaper, Mr Farish said Britain's relationship with the US had never been closer.
He claimed negative caricatures about President Bush and US foreign policy "find little resonance" among Britons, who understood US foreign policy.
The British people see President Bush "as a plain-spoken man of principle who says what he believes", he said.
"They understand that American foreign policy is motivated by a genuine desire to make the world a better, safer place."
'Cultural DNA'
Mr Farish spoke of a "deep and profound personal bond" between Britons and Americans.
"Our histories, our legal systems, our arts and letters, and our popular entertainments share a lot of cultural DNA."
And he praised the gestures of British people and their support in the wake of the 11 September attacks.
"It is in such trying times that one discovers which friends are really true."
Mr Farish comes from a business background and was a board member for a number of commercial organisations including gas and oil companies.
He is expected to return to Kentucky in July where he is a leading breeder of thoroughbred race horses.
