ASTANA, Kazakhstan (AP) - Russia gave the Bush administration intelligence that suggested Saddam Hussein's regime was preparing attacks against the United States and its interests abroad before the Iraq war, President Vladimir Putin said Friday.

Putin said he couldn't comment on how critical the Russians' information was in U.S. decision to invade Iraq. However, he said the intelligence didn't cause Russia to waver from its firm opposition to the war.

"Indeed, after Sept. 11, 2001, and before the start of the military operation in Iraq, the Russian special services ... received information that officials from Saddam's regime were preparing terrorist attacks in the United States and outside it against the U.S. military and other interests," Putin said.

"Despite that information about terrorist attacks being prepared by Saddam's regime, Russia's position on Iraq remains unchanged," Putin said.

Putin said Russia didn't have any information that Saddam's regime had actually been behind any terrorist acts.

This is just huge news and about time.

I am sick and tired of hearing that this Dictator who took pot shots at American and British planes before the war officially started was not a threat.

We can sure use Putin's help. This conflicts with earlier statements by him though:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200312/s1013128.htm

"We are do not want the United States to lose their war on terrorism - we are US partners in the fight against terrorism," Mr Putin said.

"But as for Iraq, this is a separate matter. There were no international terrorists under Hussein. This is a separate problem," he said.

If Putin provided us with intelligence of Sadam planning attacks against the U.S., then the media is going to have a difficult time maintaining their mantra that "Sadam did not pose a terrorist threat to the U.S."

Moreover, convincing the masses that the preemptive overthrow of Sadam's regime was a grave mistake that Bush should apologize for will be even harder in the face of these facts.

Much to CBSCNNABCNYT's dismay, there is intelligence out there that they are not privy to which will hurt their propoganda campaign.

b>Predicted Democrat Spin

Putin is being forced by the RNC to make this statement.

Haliburton, on direct orders from the President Bush and Vice President Cheney, is holding Putin's family hostage in a secret room at Abu Ghraib prison were they wear panties on their heads at all times. The CIA knows about this, but they have been warned that if they leak it to the media, president Bush will reveal the names and locations of all their agents to Bob Novak. As we, speak John Kerry and his former Vietnam Vet war buddies are planning a daring rescue attempt so the world we finally see the truth about George Bush...

I probably shouldn't have done this, it will be posted as the gospel truth on DU within the hour...

You know what, this is potentially Huge, but I'll wait for a couple of days before I jump for joy. The media often gets things wrong on the first pass. Putin will put out a "clarification" that is much less definitive or something like that. I'll wait 48 hours to see whats up. Thats what I have learned about todays media.

Hillary, Hillary.....Don't you realize that you and hubby (or whatever he is) have said Iraq has WMD time after time. So if they are found, you're right like Bush and if they're not found, you're intelligence stunk and you're right like Bush. Honey...It's a dilemma and you're check mated.

Speaking of the Times, I received a mailed solicitation to subscribe to the Times yesterday. I wrote across the form that "Satan will be iceskating before I subscribe to Pravda on the Hudson" and mailed it back to them. I figured the least I could do to thank them for their "journalism" would be to use their free postage.

Great summary re $inator Hildebea$t and the Iraq WMDs.

Her remarks were echoed by many rats during the Clintoon era of terror against America.

Now, what the dems & media like NY Slimes are going to say about this?

John Kerry: The Bush administration has exaggerated the threat of terrorism and Putin has become the newest victim to the president's web of deceit. Meanwhile, we have the Bush Depression and every American is on a soup line. Buy Heinz!

good point. We were already in a shooting war and territorial struggle with him when 9/11 broke out and he had the best motive of all of the suspects to attack us then or later. Even if he only knew about OBL but did not "collaborate" on this particular attack, he still would be emboldened (maybe even a bit envious) after it happened.

Yes, it confirms we do have information on Putin in the Oil for Food scandal. Nice to see him cooperating. I am certain that there is much more that he can and will do now.

I think you nailed it. GWB has and will be using the Oil for Food scandal as a bargaining chip with the miscreants. It is no coincidence that the UN and others are starting to come around. I would also note that Russia and France were pushing the UN prior to 9/11 to lift the sanctions against Iraq.

As far as the credibility of Russian intelligence on Iraq is concerned, the Russians worked closely with Iraq for several decades and was the biggest arms supplier. I can also recall the large Russian convoy that left Baghdad just prior to the invasion. I bet they carted out all kinds of incriminating information.
