June 18, 2004 -- A Queens man detained secretly in New York since April in connection with a foiled London bomb plot told authorities that al Qaeda is planning more attacks on American soil, U.S. counterterrorism officials said yesterday. The information that Mohammed Junaid Babar, 29, provided was part of the overall intelligence that prompted Attorney General John Ashcroft to warn last month that Osama bin Laden's terrorists inside America are "almost ready" for another attack, the officials said.Babar, a U.S. citizen of Pakistani descent who grew up in Queens, was picked up in April as he headed to a Long Island City taxi-driving school, and was taken to the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan.
Babar has pleaded guilty to charges in a sealed indictment and given information about a Pakistani terrorism cell's plot against London targets. The plot was foiled in March when British authorities nabbed eight suspects, law-enforcement officials told the Associated Press.
