That's my thought as well.
If something house sized hits on land, they're going to find it. Just look for the giant crater. Otherwise, get some seismologists to triangulate the source of the massive shockwave that everyone within a hundred miles or so felt.
At this point I'm not sure whether it's completely made up, or there was some kind of meteorite and people totally misjudged its size.
