A prostitute on the faculty at Columbia?

When we lodged a complaint that Columbia University had allowed Comedy Central to film a movie entitled "Porn and Chicken" at Columbia in 2002, we thought that we had reached the dregs of a cultural wasteland. We were wrong. According to an article in the June 13th edition of the New York Times Magazine, Andrea Fraser is selling her body to a collector for sex on a video. What the entertainment column failed to mention was that Ms. Fraser is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Columbia University School for the Arts.
Even if the "art" was not performed at Columbia, the damage to the reputation of the university remains. The university was well aware of her X rated activities, when she was hired. Among her more famous performances was a 2002 piece, Official Welcome, where she criticized the excesses of the art world with a video of her giving a banal monologue from an arts award show, while stripping at the home of an art collector.
While not an especially egregious case, the perversity masquerading as art worthy of academia is not limited to Ms. Fraser. It seems that one of her students, Jacquelyn Johnston (BC '04) plans to use money awarded to her for a piece entitled Virgin Canvas -evidently allowing students to paint on you makes a serious artistic statement and challenges patriarchal assumptions of art- to run a 30 second film of women's breasts on the Howard Stern show.
If the university wishes to retain a modicum of higher education worthy of the Ivy League, it should not make decisions more worthy of an institution located in the West Village. It is time to clean up the Art Department starting with Ms. Fraser.

It is sad enough that such pornographic works have escaped the pages of Adult Magazines, or that such purient behavior is thought of as avante guard. That Columbia University is used for such perversity is a disgrace to the university and its history.

You couldn't write fiction a tenth as ludicrous as these fools live out.

As a Columbia alum, I'd rather have Ms. Fraser on the faculty any day over Edward Said. Fraser is just an idiot, she isn't dangerous. Said used his cred as a Columbia professor to spread hatred, anti-American, pro-terrorist views. May he burn in hell.

Mogadishu Nick is barely in the top 10.
Columbia brought over the Frankfurt Scholl, for heaven's sake. (Herbert Marcuse, Ardno,...)
Eric Foner, Edward Said, Margaret Mead,

I'd be afraid to fall asleep around chicks like that.. I don't know. Judging from those pictures, I might not mind sleeping around with chicks like that. I bet she'd be a good time.

What is wrong with a prostitute on the faculty in college? Compared to all the communist professors teaching in them now the whore at least has something of value to offer.

You forgot Said's other roles as author of Orientalism and president of the Modern Language Association. (Ingsoc)

Nasty list of characters there, for sure. Edward Said is something else -- a liar (about his past), an ingrate (who despises America yet somehow not enough to actually leave it), a terrorist sympathizer (who quit the PLO for being too "moderate), and a homo.

This is Mad TV or SNL material presented in an artistic manner.
Frankly, I consider the fact that these women are taken seriously to be parody-worthy.

that reminds me of the first time I went to MoMA and saw a pile of plain masonry bricks. I asked what they paid some Brit "artist" for this rectangular stack...it was several hundred grand.
Being a rube from Mississippi, I couldn't help laughing my ass off right there in front of the pretenders.
reminds me of The Emperor's New Clothes

women like that would have to be domesticated.
the latter one reminds me of a gal I knew in Tampa whose husband had shot himself (twice in the head)(she "found" him)...she kept the bloody shirt in her nightstand and liked to pull it out and sleep in it.
she looked great and a body to die for (likely) but.....
...well today my instinct would win out over my hormones....one benefit of being 46 over 26..lol

One of my old loves from the 80s taught at Barnard and we lived in Colombia Housing.
Faculty parties were a riot with me there....
